Slot Ready to Move On from Konate as Liverpool Centre-Back Rejects Fresh Contract Terms

Ibrahima Konate's days at Anfield look numbered. The Liverpool centre-back is edging toward the exit after his performances have taken a sharp nosedive, prompting Arne Slot to consider life without him when his contract expires this summer.

It's a stark reversal of fortune for the 25-year-old. Twelve months ago, Konate was flourishing alongside captain Virgil van Dijk, forming what many regarded as the Premier League's premier defensive partnership. That partnership proved instrumental as Liverpool claimed their 20th league title last season. But this campaign has told a different story entirely.

The Frenchman's decline has been marked and costly. Once a linchpin of Liverpool's backline, he's now become a liability—a concerning development that's all but scuppered his hopes of a dream move to Real Madrid, which had appeared realistic before his form collapsed.

Negotiations over fresh terms have stalled badly. Graeme Bailey's reporting suggests Liverpool and the club hierarchy anticipated wrapping up a deal by now. Progress was made during the international windows in October and November, but momentum has since evaporated. The gap between what the club is offering and what Konate wants remains substantial.

According to a source close to the talks: "In all honesty, Liverpool and Richard Hughes thought this would be done by now. Talks went quite well over the international breaks in October and November, but since December and now, things have again stalled. Liverpool are confident that Konate has not agreed terms, or is close to, with any other side, but they know interest is there."

Konate's rejection of Liverpool's latest proposal has left the club unbothered. Speaking to Football Insider, former Premier League chief scout Mick Brown suggested Slot has simply decided to cut his losses.

"Konate has made far too many mistakes that end up being costly," Brown explained. "Mistakes and centre-halves don't go together. If you want to be successful, you can't afford to be worrying about whether your defenders are going to mess it up. They have to be reliable and dependable, and Liverpool don't think Konate is one of those.

"He hasn't signed a new contract, and Liverpool are okay with that. They're not going to keep offering him new ones when he isn't earning it on the pitch. Slot isn't happy with the way he's been playing, so he's ready to let him go. Then they'll want to bring in somebody to upgrade on him. Konate is finished at Liverpool at the end of the season. They're going to let him go and then move to bring in a more reliable and accomplished replacement."

The writing appears firmly on the wall. Liverpool's patience has worn thin, and a fresh start elsewhere beckons for Konate come summer.
