Mamardashvili's Anfield Patience Wearing Thin as Valencia Circle for Loan Return

Giorgi Mamardashvili's Liverpool adventure appears to be heading for an early intermission, with the Georgian goalkeeper growing restless on the Anfield bench and seriously weighing up a loan exit for next season.

The 25-year-old arrived at Liverpool last summer as part of the club's extensive recruitment drive—a spending spree that cost close to half a billion pounds. While some signings have hit the ground running, notably Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, others have struggled to establish themselves. Milos Kerkez remains a work in progress, whilst injuries have restricted Jeremie Frimpong, Giovanni Leoni, and Alexander Isak from accumulating meaningful game time.

Mamardashvili's situation, however, stems from a different problem entirely. The presence of established number one Alisson Becker meant the newcomer was always destined for a watching brief, but his frustration has intensified following his omission from the FA Cup clash with Brighton. With just 934 minutes to his name this season, his patience has evidently run out.

According to transfer insider Graeme Bailey, Mamardashvili is actively considering requesting a temporary move for the 2026/27 campaign—a development that would present Liverpool with a genuine headache.

The Reds have already sold Caoimhin Kelleher to Brentford, whilst Vitezslav Jaros is nursing a serious knee injury that threatens to sideline him for the early months of next season. Should Mamardashvili depart on loan, Liverpool would need to either recruit fresh cover for Alisson or place considerable faith in Freddie Woodman, who boasts nearly 300 senior appearances but just four Premier League outings to his name.

The likely destination? Valencia, naturally. The Spanish club are reportedly keeping close tabs on Mamardashvili's predicament, and there's a logical thread to follow here.

When Mamardashvili departed for Merseyside, Valencia brought in Athletic Bilbao's Julen Agirrezabala on a temporary deal. That arrangement includes a purchase option valued around €12m, but should Valencia decline to make it permanent, they'd find themselves short of a reliable starting goalkeeper for the new campaign. Bringing Mamardashvili back for another season would represent a sensible solution for the La Liga side.
