Slot Puts Frimpong's Groin Injury at "Few Weeks" as Liverpool Eye January Transfer

Arne Slot has offered a glimmer of good news regarding Jeremie Frimpong's fitness prospects, though the Liverpool boss confirmed the Netherlands international will miss this weekend's Newcastle clash.

Frimpong picked up a groin injury during Wednesday's 6-0 Champions League demolition of Qarabag and faces a spell recovering. However, Slot's initial fears of a lengthy absence have eased somewhat. Speaking Friday morning, the manager suggested the problem would sideline his full-back for merely "a few weeks" rather than consigning him to months on the treatment table.

"He will definitely not be in the squad tomorrow," Slot stated. "He is out for a few weeks but not as bad as we thought, so something positive from something not so positive."

The 26-year-old has endured a tricky opening campaign since arriving at Anfield as part of the club's substantial summer reconstruction, which topped £400m in spending. Form and fitness have both proved troublesome during his debut season on Merseyside.

This latest setback arrives at a particularly awkward moment for Liverpool, who are already managing without Conor Bradley for the remainder of the campaign. Slot faces a juggling act with his defensive options, potentially shuffling Curtis Jones, Joe Gomez, and Dominik Szoboszlai around the backline to compensate.

Gomez, however, won't feature against Newcastle. "Joe will not be available but that doesn't have to take much longer any more," Slot explained. Jones is back in contention after recovering from illness.

Despite having internal alternatives, Slot has signalled Liverpool's willingness to dip into the transfer market. The manager revealed the club "will" recruit a replacement should two key criteria align: identifying a suitable player and agreeing a fee that makes financial sense.

"If we have addressed a player we think can help us and the figure is possible then we will do so," Slot said. "Those are conversations that take place not far away from here, but not in this room."

Liverpool return to Premier League business this weekend desperate to maintain their push toward Champions League qualification. Newcastle represents a formidable opponent, and Slot paid tribute to the Magpies' credentials.

"We have experienced how tough it is to play against Newcastle in the one-and-a-half years I have been here now," he reflected. "It's always been a very tough contest, a very tough game for us, and for them as well. A great game to look forward to because we both had a good result during the week. A home game at Anfield is always something to look forward to."

Slot stressed the mounting importance of every fixture as Liverpool battle to secure their European spot. "Throughout the whole season every game is crucial, but the way we have positioned ourselves now makes probably every game even more crucial because that is definitely what we want to achieve," he said.
