Burley's Verdict: Liverpool Face Slot Reckoning as Alonso's Return Emerges

Liverpool have climbed to fourth in the Premier League table following their third consecutive league victory, putting them eight points clear of Brighton and virtually assuring Champions League qualification. Yet despite this uptick in form, serious questions loom over Arne Slot's future at Anfield.

The Dutchman's tenure has been marked by considerable turbulence this season. Having won the league last term, Liverpool face the prospect of ending this campaign without silverware despite investing over £400m in new personnel. Slot has laboured under genuine hardship—the devastating loss of Diogo Jota, a mounting injury toll, and a failure to secure Marc Guehi in the summer window—but sceptics remain unconvinced.

Former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley has become the latest voice to question whether Slot will survive the summer. Speaking on ESPN, Burley stated bluntly: "I don't think they'll run with him next year, I don't. I think there are too many questions from up above about spending money again and letting him [spend it]."

This assessment gains fresh weight from reports emerging from Spain suggesting that Xabi Alonso has now confirmed his intention to return home to Liverpool. The former Real Madrid boss is understood to have finalised the arrangement following a meeting in the Spanish capital.

Steve Nicol has grown increasingly uncertain about Slot's prospects. Six weeks ago, Nicol would have backed the manager to remain in post, but his confidence has visibly eroded. "It feels as though it's getting lost on the field, and you're getting more anxious every time you're going to sit down to watch it," he admitted.

Danny Murphy, meanwhile, has revealed his instinctive belief that Slot faces the exit door. The former Liverpool midfielder acknowledged that when supporters turn against their manager to this degree, history suggests there is rarely a path back. Securing Champions League football will provide some defensive ammunition, Murphy conceded, yet he remains unconvinced Slot possesses the tactical blueprint to restore Liverpool to title-challenging status. "I'd think they'd have more of a chance [with a different coach] to go back to the type of football that Liverpool fans want, because I don't think he's going to do it," Murphy concluded.
