Gakpo Available at a Price as Atletico Madrid Circle: Liverpool Willing to Listen

Liverpool are prepared to cash in on Cody Gakpo come the summer window, provided the Dutchman makes clear his desire to leave Merseyside.

Gakpo has established himself as the go-to option on the left flank since Luis Diaz's departure to Bayern Munich last summer. Yet his campaign has fallen short of what was hoped, with just seven goals and four assists from 34 outings across all competitions leaving plenty of observers unimpressed with his contribution.

The 24-year-old faces little internal pressure for his place, with Florian Wirtz occasionally deployed on the left wing when not operating centrally behind the striker. This lack of competition has done little to sharpen his game, and the Anfield hierarchy are reportedly eyeing upgrades on both flanks this term—Mohamed Salah's own dip in form also under scrutiny.

According to reports, should Liverpool pursue a fresh left-sided attacker, the door could swing open for Gakpo's exit. Journalist Pete O'Rourke suggested that bringing in reinforcements "could open the door" for the winger to depart, though he remains contracted until 2030 and is still viewed as a key cog by Arne Slot, who continues to select him regularly.

However, cracks appear to be forming. Spanish outlets claim Gakpo harbours 'some doubts' about his long-term standing in the project, with a 'silent discontent' simmering beneath the surface at Anfield. While Liverpool don't view his departure as essential, they've reportedly drawn a line in the sand at €100 million—though that figure could shift if the player maintains pressure and negotiations develop.

Atletico Madrid have positioned themselves as serious suitors, viewing Gakpo as a more attainable target than Victor Osimhen, whose wage demands make a move unrealistic. The winger's profile suits Diego Simeone's requirements, and the prospect of being a central figure in a competitive setup holds genuine appeal for a player who, despite his Reds status, could be tempted by a fresh challenge.

The Spanish club reckon they might prise him away for somewhere in the region of €80 million—a figure still below Liverpool's opening gambit, but perhaps not entirely out of reach should talks progress.
