Liverpool Enter Talks for Geertruida as Slot Bolsters Defensive Options Before Deadline

Liverpool have opened negotiations with Sunderland over a potential move for defender Lutsharel Geertruida, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, with the window set to slam shut on Monday.

The Dutch international represents a familiar face for Arne Slot, who worked with him during his time at Feyenoord. Romano confirmed the club-to-club talks are underway, with initial contact already established between the two Premier League sides.

The timing of the move reflects Liverpool's mounting defensive headaches. Conor Bradley faces an extended spell on the sidelines following a serious injury picked up earlier this month, whilst Jeremie Frimpong is sidelined for several weeks. The injury crisis forced Slot to deploy midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai at right-back during their midweek Champions League outing against Qarabag, and Ryan Gravenberch was pressed into action at centre-back in the same fixture.

Ibrahima Konate's return alongside Virgil van Dijk for Saturday's trip to Newcastle offered some relief, but the underlying shortage of defensive cover has become impossible to ignore. Slot himself hinted at transfer activity before the weekend, telling journalists: "I think we are trying to strengthen the squad and not trying to weaken it. But yeah, 48 hours to go. Geertruida, a versatile operator capable of playing anywhere across the backline and in defensive midfield, has featured 17 times in the Premier League for Sunderland this campaign. The 24-year-old has earned 19 caps for the Netherlands and represents the sort of tactical flexibility Slot may require given his current injury troubles.

The move comes on the back of a morale-boosting period for the Reds. A commanding 4-1 victory over Newcastle on Saturday propelled them into fifth place, momentarily leapfrogging Manchester United, though Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side could reclaim that position with a win over Fulham on Sunday. It's been a frustrating campaign by Liverpool's standards, but two consecutive victories—yielding 10 goals whilst conceding just one—have offered a glimmer of hope.

When asked whether consecutive wins provided the perfect platform for a push up the table, Slot acknowledged the importance of consistency whilst tempering expectations. "Yeah, of course. We are in an industry where it's all about results," he reflected. "I've asked after the Bournemouth game that we have to improve in both boxes because in between we do so many things at such a high level. In the last two games, scoring 10 and only conceding one, I think I can safely say that that has been a big improvement. So yeah, pleased and happy that we have these two results. But because of the many points we've dropped, we are also aware that this is certainly not enough."
