Iraola's Liverpool Deal Confirmed as Slot Era Ends; Diomande Agrees Terms

Andoni Iraola will be Liverpool's next head coach, according to Fabrizio Romano's confirmation of an agreement in principle. The deal comes after rapid developments over the previous 48 hours, with the Bournemouth manager primed to take over from Arne Slot.

Slot's departure surprised many given his Premier League title-winning first season, yet a fifth-place finish last term proved insufficient to save his job. The Dutchman's early success could not shield him from the sack as Liverpool opted to chart a new course.

Iraola, whose contract with Bournemouth expires this month, quickly became the leading candidate for the vacancy. Romano's confirmation on X sealed the matter: "BREAKING: Liverpool reach agreement in principle to appoint Andoni Iraola as new manager, here we go! Exclusive story from Saturday, 100% confirmed: Arne Slot left and Iraola will lead #LFC project, as expected. Talks advanced over last 48h and deal in place."

In a parallel development, RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande has signalled his willingness to join both PSG and Liverpool during the summer window. French journalist Santi Aouna revealed that multiple meetings between PSG, Leipzig, and Diomande's representatives have already taken place.

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has backed Iraola's appointment, suggesting the Basque coach's tactical approach could energise Anfield. Speaking to BetMGM, Fowler contrasted Iraola's high-octane methods with the slower, less thrilling football witnessed under Slot.

"Straight away if a new manager can come in and give everyone a bit of a lift it gives everyone a bit more energy and things improve," Fowler said. "I think what we don't want is the style of football we've seen over the last year which has been quite slow and not that exciting."

Fowler highlighted the vastly different pressures between managing Bournemouth and Liverpool, but expressed optimism about Iraola's potential fit. "He looks more of a Jurgen Klopp-type manager than Arne Slot in the way his teams play – very high-energy and pressing high," the former striker explained. "They had a bit more oomph than Liverpool had last season and that's what the fans want."

The challenge facing Iraola is substantial. Fowler stressed that trophies remain non-negotiable at a club of Liverpool's stature. "The new manager has to win things – that's what you're judged on at Liverpool. It's a prerequisite of any manager at the football club, it doesn't matter where you've been previously," he noted.

Success, Fowler argued, demands both league ambitions and cup competitions as fallback objectives. "You can't beat around the bush at Liverpool – you're coming into one of the biggest clubs in the world and if you're coming with the mantra of 'doing well' then Liverpool isn't the club for you," he concluded. "You've got to play a brand of football that gets the fans excited and gets them on your side."
