Robertson Calls Time on Liverpool Career as Salah Departure Signals End of Klopp Era

Scotland's captain has confirmed his exit from Liverpool at the conclusion of the current campaign, bringing to a close a nine-year association with the Merseyside club.

Robertson's decision to depart follows Mohamed Salah's shock announcement that he too will be leaving Anfield, despite having penned fresh terms last April. While Salah chose to end his Liverpool story despite a contract extension, Robertson's situation is more straightforward—his existing deal simply expires this summer, paving the way for a free transfer move.

The 32-year-old left-back had attracted interest from Tottenham and Atletico Madrid during the January window but ultimately remained at Anfield. However, opportunities have dried up significantly this season following Liverpool's summer acquisition of Milos Kerkez from abroad for a reported £40million fee.

Speaking to the club's channels, Robertson reflected warmly on his time at the club. "It's never easy leaving a club like Liverpool, it has been a huge part of mine and my family's life for the last nine years," he said. "But for me, players move on, other people move on – the thing that stays the same is the club and obviously the fans."

He continued: "I've had an amazing nine years here. I think it has been well documented, especially over the last year or so, I've had opportunities to leave and I've not taken them because of how difficult it is to leave this club. And I wouldn't change that for the world."

Robertson acknowledged that the time had come for fresh chapters. "I know football moves on, I know teams move on, and I think now is the time for me to move on and go wherever my next move is and wherever my career takes me," he explained. "I'll always look back on amazing memories at this football club, I've put my heart and soul into the club for nine years and I've not got many regrets. I've grown as a man and as a person. This club will always mean the world to me, the fans will mean the world to me. It has been a hell of a journey."

Arriving from Hull City in July 2017 for £7million under Jürgen Klopp's stewardship, Robertson rapidly became a supporter's favourite, combining tireless industry with an engaging personality. Across 373 appearances, the Scot accumulated eight trophies, including a pair of Premier League crowns and the Champions League triumph of 2019.

Robertson embodied everything about Klopp's relentless, high-octane football—the pressing, the tempo, the attacking verve. Yet under Arne Slot's management, Liverpool have adopted a notably different tactical philosophy. Having claimed the Premier League title in Slot's inaugural campaign, the club is plainly transitioning away from the intensity that defined the Klopp years.

Kerkez, despite possessing similar attacking instincts to Robertson, has yet to establish himself as a long-term solution at left-back. Nevertheless, Robertson's exit represents another symbolic step in Liverpool's evolution—a farewell to the old guard as the new era takes shape.

With Robertson and Salah both heading for the exits, an unmistakable chapter in Anfield's recent history is drawing to a close.
