Liverpool Enter Battle for Brighton's Baleba as Seagulls Slam Door on January Exit

The race for Brighton's brightest young talent is heating up, with Liverpool now firmly in the mix alongside Manchester United in pursuit of Carlos Baleba. The 100 million euro (£86m) valuation underlines just how highly the Seagulls regard their midfield prospect.

Baleba has established himself as one of the Premier League's most promising young midfielders, drawing admiration from several of England's heavyweight clubs. United had their fingers burned attempting a move last summer, when financial constraints ruled out any realistic pursuit after they'd already committed around £230m to bringing in Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Senne Lammens.

That failed approach would have set them back roughly £100m – money they simply didn't have to spare at that point in the window.

The midfielder's form dipped following that failed transfer saga, leaving him looking well below his usual standards during the early months of this campaign. A resurgence in recent weeks suggests he's moved past that disappointment, though his stock continues to rise considerably.

United remain keen on landing a long-term successor to Casemiro in the middle of the park. Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton and Joao Gomes all feature prominently on their shopping list, alongside younger prospects like Lille's Ayyoub Bouaddi and Olympiakos' Christos Mouzakitis. Sky Sports reported that United have explored potential conditions for a January deal, though a move this month appears highly unlikely.

The club's hierarchy has signalled their intention to strengthen central midfield significantly throughout 2026, with at least one – possibly two – marquee signings targeted.

Yet Brighton have effectively slammed the door on any winter departure. Despite fielding multiple enquiries this month, the Sussex club's message to interested parties is unambiguous: Baleba is not for sale in January. While few expect him to remain at the Amex beyond the summer window, Brighton are standing firm on keeping their prized asset until at least June.

Liverpool's entry into the market suggests they're preparing for potential midfield evolution, though they'll need to bide their time along with everyone else chasing the Brighton star.
