Redknapp Tears Into Liverpool's 'Staggering' Failure to Shift Ball During Bournemouth Chaos

Jamie Redknapp has trained his guns on Liverpool's playing staff over their baffling inability to get the ball out of play following Joe Gomez's injury during their 3-2 reverse at Bournemouth, with the delay proving costly in the extreme.

Gomez went down after colliding with goalkeeper Alisson as he sought to block goalscorer Evanilson in the 26th minute. What followed was a seven-minute nightmare: Liverpool remained down to ten men while Wataru Endo sat ready on the sideline, desperately waiting to enter the fray. During that entire stretch, the ball never left play, leaving Slot's hands tied and forcing his side to operate at a numerical disadvantage.

The consequences were dire. With Endo still stranded in the technical area, Bournemouth struck again through Alex Jimenez on 33 minutes to double their advantage—a goal that would likely never have materialised had Liverpool managed to get a centre-back on the pitch.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Redknapp expressed his bewilderment at the situation. "You can see it's a nasty injury, you give him maybe a minute or two, then you try to make a substitution," he began. "This took seven minutes before Liverpool decided to make a substitution. Then they obviously ended up conceding that second goal. I find it staggering in this day and age that you're going to have a situation like that."

Redknapp was equally critical of the players' failure to take matters into their own hands. "Because I don't just want to criticise the manager or backroom staff. Sometimes you as a player you take responsibility. You realise you've got 10 men. Gravenberch has dropped into the back four, (so you think): 'What can we do about this?' Nobody was saying, let's get the ball out of play, let's get a centre back on. They don't take the opportunity."

Jamie Carragher, analysing alongside Redknapp, suggested Liverpool's coaching staff had also fallen short. "Arne Slot is telling his players to get the ball out of play while someone is giving Endo instructions. Just get him on the pitch," Carragher said. "It's of paramount importance that you get him on. Get your kit off and get on the pitch, mate. I used the words amateurs at half-time. It's not good enough. Endo should have been on the pitch four minutes earlier. If he was on, the goal doesn't happen."

Carragher and Redknapp had reviewed the footage multiple times to ensure Liverpool hadn't missed an obvious opportunity. "We've gone through it a few times because we want to check and give Liverpool the benefit of the doubt," Carragher explained. "Have they got an opportunity to kick it out? Has there been a free kick? Has the manager spoken to the players and made this a priority for everyone?"

Slot, meanwhile, offered his own perspective on the debacle. "We went down to 10 men. You can't bring a player on sooner if the ball is not out of play," the Liverpool manager said. "The moment he said he was injured he said he wanted to keep on trying but then he said he couldn't go back in. We kept the ball and the moment we lost it, it took us a long time, we couldn't make a foul to get the ball out of play."
