Liverpool appear ready to break the bank for Tottenham's standout defender Micky van de Ven this summer, with reports suggesting they will table an offer matching Spurs' 95 million euro (£82m) valuation.

The Reds have long harboured designs on the 25-year-old Dutchman, maintaining their interest even before he landed at White Hart Lane. With Virgil van Dijk entering the twilight of his career and set to depart when his contract expires in 2027, Liverpool need to plan for succession at centre-back. That succession planning has evidently led them to Van de Ven.

Liverpool's defensive stocks appear solid on paper. Ibrahima Konate has agreed fresh terms, while the club can also call upon Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet alongside Van Dijk. Yet the reality is that the captain's influence is waning, making a long-term replacement essential.

Enter Van de Ven. The Tottenham man has established himself as one of the Premier League's most commanding defenders, blessed with the sort of athletic prowess that modern football demands. His speed, physical presence, and ground-covering ability in transition have caught Liverpool's eye—precisely the profile they believe will slot seamlessly into their high-pressing system.

Ex-Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has thrown his weight behind the potential signing, suggesting Van de Ven ticks every box required at Anfield.

"He's a wonderful athlete and good footballer," Murphy told AceOdds. "He's adaptable too—can play left-back, left wing-back, has done different jobs for Holland. He's got presence, he's got size, he's got Premier League experience."

Murphy did acknowledge occasional discipline issues, though he attributes these to Tottenham's notoriously chaotic environment rather than any fundamental character flaw. The midfielder praised Van de Ven's composure, noting such lapses remain rare.

The sole reservation in Murphy's assessment concerns durability. Van de Ven has yet to complete a full season without injury setbacks, a concern when building a defensive unit that requires continuity and partnership-building.
