Liverpool Step Up Pursuit of Wharton as Van Hecke Contract Uncertainty Offers Defensive Opening

Liverpool's transfer ambitions are becoming increasingly clear, with the Merseyside outfit pursuing multiple Premier League targets as they look to bolster their squad across the pitch.

The most immediate opportunity may lie at Brighton, where centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke's future remains uncertain. The Dutch international's contract runs until 2027, but according to former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown, a new deal looks unlikely. Brighton face a decision over whether to sell this month or risk losing their standout defender for nothing in 18 months.

"I'm not convinced he will want to stay at Brighton," Brown told Football Insider. "He's got the bright lights of the Champions League in his mind now, and it's hard to turn that down, especially when Brighton are struggling a bit. They've lost some key players and dropped off a bit from where they were when he signed."

Since the 2023/24 season, Van Hecke has formed an impressive defensive partnership with Lewis Dunk at the Amex, but the lure of European football appears to be pulling him away. Liverpool's well-documented centre-back shortage has put them on alert, and Brown believes the 25-year-old would favour a move to Anfield over remaining on the south coast.

"Liverpool have been keeping an eye on him because of their situation, and if he becomes available for whatever reason, they may well make a move," Brown explained. "Tottenham also want reinforcements and he's somebody who's been on their radar for a while. Say Liverpool come in for him, I think he'd want to join them rather than staying at Brighton."

A summer move appears more plausible than a January switch, given Brighton's reluctance to weaken mid-season, though Van Hecke will undoubtedly attract interest from multiple suitors should he become available at a reduced fee.

On the attacking front, Liverpool are reportedly making "extraordinary moves" to land Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton. According to claims from a social media account citing elite reporters, the Reds are actively negotiating with Palace over a realistic fee for the 21-year-old England midfielder.

Wharton represents a different proposition entirely. Palace hold all the leverage – the midfielder is under contract until 2029 and remains central to their ambitions. A summer departure might command a fee in the region of £65m, but any mid-season sale would almost certainly demand upwards of £85m. Palace's negotiating strength cannot be understated, and January movement feels unlikely.

Yet from what's on display in the Premier League, Wharton's quality justifies such a premium. His performances have marked him out as one of the division's brightest talents, and Liverpool's interest underscores their determination to compete at the highest level.

The Reds' transfer strategy appears to involve signing a young centre-back for summer arrival alongside another first-team-ready defensive option, while also pursuing a versatile attacking player. Whether those ambitions extend to both Van Hecke and Wharton remains to be seen, but Liverpool are clearly operating with intent as they look to strengthen their hand.
