Ornstein Reveals Konate Contract Talks Hit Stalemate as Liverpool Face Defensive Uncertainty

The contract saga surrounding Ibrahima Konate has taken another twist, with The Athletic's David Ornstein now claiming negotiations between the French defender and Liverpool have stalled entirely.

The development comes in stark contrast to suggestions earlier this week that a fresh deal was approaching the finish line. Fabrizio Romano had indicated that talks were in their final stages, with salary terms nearly settled and only the contract length and various clauses requiring clarification. Yet Ornstein's latest update paints a far grimmer picture, suggesting the two parties have become locked in disagreement.

Konate's contract expires this summer, leaving Liverpool facing the prospect of losing a key defensive figure on a free transfer. Real Madrid and other European heavyweights have been monitoring the situation closely, though Romano's reporting suggested the Reds remained frontrunners in the race for his signature.

The timing proves particularly awkward for Jurgen Klopp's successor, given Liverpool's defensive vulnerabilities this season. The club's centre-back options have been stretched thin following a series of setbacks. Giovanni Leoni, signed from Parma in the summer window, suffered a season-ending injury early in the campaign. Meanwhile, the failed pursuit of Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi—who withdrew from his medical when the Londoners pulled the plug—left another hole in the backline.

Consequently, Virgil van Dijk and Konate have shouldered an enormous workload, featuring in virtually every fixture. Yet their performances have drawn criticism. Jamie Carragher recently took aim at Konate's consistency following Liverpool's 2-0 midweek defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, arguing the defender "makes a mistake every game."

The pundit elaborated on CBS Sports: "Defenders were jumping into midfield, there was no one to mark and Virgil van Dijk, at 34 years of age, was having to run in there and across. He couldn't do it. People have criticised Van Dijk for his performances this season, but I think it's been harsh. He plays every game, and the fella next to him has been awful all season – and poor again tonight."
