Bayern's Surprise Bid for Ngumoha Collapses as Liverpool Hold Firm

Bayern Munich came calling for Liverpool's exciting young prospect Rio Ngumoha this week, only to see their ambitious pursuit fall flat before it ever truly got off the ground.
The Bavarian outfit had been quietly working behind the scenes with the 17-year-old and his representatives, eventually securing a full verbal agreement on Tuesday, 26 May. Head coach Vincent Kompany had personally signed off on the move after direct conversations with the Liverpool gem. However, by Thursday, the whole thing had collapsed.
Ngumoha, who previously featured at Chelsea before his move to Merseyside, has caught the eye during Liverpool's 2025/26 campaign. Despite managing just 19 Premier League starts, the teenager consistently emerged as the Reds' most potent attacking threat and arguably warranted greater game time under then-boss Arne Slot. With new manager Andoni Iraola taking the reins and promising a more expansive approach at Anfield, Ngumoha figured to have genuine opportunities ahead.
Yet Bayern saw an opening. The German champions were hunting for reinforcements on the left flank to provide Luis Díaz with genuine competition, having already struck out on Barcelona's Anthony Gordon. Ngumoha represented their primary target for that role, with Kompany and the board driving the push.
According to respected journalist David Ornstein, Bayern had identified Ngumoha as their main candidate and the player was well aware of their serious intentions. Crucially, though, the German side had not yet formally approached Liverpool. The Reds' hierarchy made their stance abundantly clear: Ngumoha was not available, and they intended to strengthen their attacking options rather than sell them off.
German reporter Florian Plettenberg subsequently revealed the full picture. Negotiations had been running for weeks, with Bayern treating Ngumoha as their secret weapon in the market. The verbal agreement was locked in on 26 May, positioning him as a priority backup to Díaz alongside their pursuit of Gordon. But the deal evaporated just 24 hours later.
Whether Bayern can yet salvage something remains uncertain, with potential alternative targets like Brown and Saibari still under consideration. For Liverpool and Ngumoha, though, the message is clear: there is unfinished business at Anfield.
