Liverpool Eye Athletic Bilbao Star Williams as Salah Successor, Ready to Splash £69m

Liverpool are gearing up for a significant summer spending spree on the wing, with Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams emerging as a prime target to fill the void left by Mohamed Salah's announced departure.

The Anfield outfit are preparing to table a substantial offer in excess of €80m (£69m) for the Spanish winger, according to reports emerging from Spain. However, Merseyside sources suggest they will balk at triggering Williams' €95m (£82m) release clause.

The urgency to recruit fresh attacking talent has become increasingly apparent this season. Luis Diaz's impressive form at Bayern Munich has only compounded Liverpool's regret at cashing in on the Colombian last summer, while Cody Gakpo's struggles on the left flank—hampered by a meagre return in both goals and assists—have exposed the club's vulnerability in wide areas.

With Salah's exit now confirmed, Liverpool find themselves needing reinforcements on both flanks. The club's recruitment strategy has broadened considerably, with journalist Ben Jacobs revealing in March that the Reds could pursue as many as two wingers during the forthcoming transfer window.

Among those previously linked have been RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande, though the Germans are holding firm at a €100m valuation. Liverpool have also maintained historical interest in Anthony Gordon, the player they nearly secured in summer 2024, whilst Morgan Rodgers has attracted their attention as a more centrally-positioned creative outlet.

Williams, however, appears to have shifted into pole position. The 21-year-old laid down specific conditions when penning his Athletic Bilbao contract extension last summer, demanding assurances of an "ambitious project"—terms the Basque club have subsequently failed to honour. The winger now finds himself in a position to pursue pastures new, with the upcoming World Cup offering him a platform to showcase his wares to potential suitors.

Liverpool's previous interest in Williams has intensified markedly, with Spanish sources now suggesting he is "closer to joining" the Premier League side than at any point previously. The club's hierarchy appear convinced of his suitability as Salah's long-term successor, and are prepared to make a considerable financial commitment to secure his signature this summer.
