Liverpool Ready to Break Spanish Transfer Record for Bilbao's Williams as Gakpo's Future Clouds

Liverpool have signalled their intention to activate Nico Williams' release clause at Athletic Bilbao ahead of the summer transfer window, according to reports from Spain—developments that cast a shadow over Cody Gakpo's prospects at Anfield.

Fabrizio Romano recently highlighted the Reds' plans to strengthen their attacking ranks, noting on his YouTube channel that a "busy summer" awaits in wide areas. "It's very clear they need to reinforce their wingers," the transfer specialist explained, flagging concerns over Mohamed Salah and Gakpo's current situations.

Salah has endured a difficult campaign and faces potential departure to the Saudi Pro League in summer 2026, while Gakpo—despite signing fresh terms in August 2025—has disappointed supporters with his performances under Arne Slot. Pete O'Rourke suggested in February that the arrival of another left-sided attacker could pave the way for Gakpo's exit, though he remains contracted until 2030 and continues to receive regular selection.

Williams, 23, represents an intriguing alternative. The Spanish international's €100million exit clause has caught the attention of Liverpool, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich. Should the Reds meet that figure, Williams would become the most expensive Spanish player ever purchased—surpassing Kepa Arrizabalaga's €80million switch from Bilbao to Chelsea in 2018.

Williams has been made aware of external interest but currently lacks permission to enter negotiations.
