Slot's Liverpool Facing Toxic Atmosphere as Alonso Alternative Looms

The mood at Anfield risks becoming poisonous if Arne Slot stays put and Liverpool's opening months next season prove disappointing, according to prominent observer James Pearce. The stark warning comes after the Reds' limp 1-1 draw with Chelsea on Saturday, a result that left them fourth on 59 points.

Liverpool's campaign has represented a significant step backwards following their title-winning first year under Slot, despite backing him with over £440million in summer spending. The Chelsea stalemate proved particularly frustrating given the visitors had lost their previous six league matches, scoring just once during that run.

Ryan Gravenberch's early strike gave Liverpool the platform to impose themselves, yet they inexplicably surrendered the initiative. Chelsea grew into proceedings and drew level through an Enzo Fernandez free-kick that somehow evaded the far post defences.

The substitution of Rio Ngumoha—Liverpool's standout performer—for Alexander Isak in the second half drew audible disapproval from the home crowd, a telling moment of the frustration building at the club.

Writing in reaction to proceedings, Pearce highlighted a fundamental mismatch between supporter expectations and the football on display. Sporting director Richard Hughes, watching from the directors' box, would have felt the palpable discontent as Liverpool retreated and gifted Chelsea space to operate.

The Athletic analyst suggested the situation could deteriorate rapidly. Should Slot remain and form stumble early next term, the atmosphere could sour dramatically. Any mid-season managerial change—echoing the 2015 upheaval—would likely see far fewer calibre candidates available compared to the current crop of quality managers between jobs.

Xabi Alonso, the former Liverpool midfielder, would presumably have secured employment elsewhere by then, Pearce noted. There would be no equivalent to Jurgen Klopp waiting in the wings to salvage matters as he did over a decade ago.

"The end of the season can't come soon enough. There's so much wrong and it requires a sizeable leap of faith to believe Slot can fix it," Pearce concluded.

Spanish media outlets reported on Monday that Liverpool had made contact with Alonso to address lingering uncertainties over a potential move. Yet transfer insider Fabrizio Romano contradicted this assessment, stating that Liverpool's current direction firmly supports continuing with Slot.

"At the moment, the feeling at Liverpool is absolutely in the direction that they want to continue with Slot," Romano explained. "Because so far, and it's May now, it's no longer February, March, or April. In May, Liverpool have not made contact with any other manager."

Romano further stressed that despite widespread German media reports suggesting Liverpool had approached Alonso, the club has made no direct approach to the manager or his representatives this year.
