Slot Faces Mounting Pressure as Liverpool's Champions League Hopes Hang in the Balance

Arne Slot is acutely aware of the mounting scrutiny at Anfield following Liverpool's faltering form, with the Dutchman now treating Champions League qualification as an essential objective rather than a mere expectation.

The Reds suffered a damaging defeat at Brighton on Saturday, a result that compounded their recent troubles in the Premier League's upper reaches. Coming on the back of a frustrating draw against struggling Tottenham and a loss to Wolves—who claimed only their third win of the campaign—Liverpool's grip on the top four has loosened considerably.

A victory over Brighton would have seen Liverpool climb above Aston Villa into fourth place. Instead, they now risk being overtaken themselves, with fifth-placed Chelsea capable of moving two points clear should they beat Everton later in the weekend.

The campaign has been far from the success Slot enjoyed in his opening season when he guided Liverpool to the league title. A five-game winning streak at the season's outset proved misleading, with inconsistency subsequently becoming the defining characteristic of their campaign. The recent run of defeats has naturally intensified the pressure on the manager, whose stock has fallen sharply from the heights of last term.

Slot refrained from dwelling on his own position in the aftermath of the Brighton setback but made clear that European football remains within reach. "That is what I meant before the game," he explained. "What I thought was, you won't need 24 points to qualify and hopefully I am right because we aren't able to get 24 points anymore."

He acknowledged Liverpool's second-half efforts proved insufficient, noting that Brighton had the better opportunities to extend their advantage. "We kept trying, in the second-half, we were close but they were closer to score the third one than we were the second one. Unfortunately it wasn't enough after a week like this," he added.

The manager emphasised that European qualification has become a primary focus for the remainder of the season, highlighting progress made in the domestic cup competitions as a consolation. "There is always pressure at Liverpool. On me, on the players. That is completely normal," Slot stated. "We have qualified for the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and the Champions League but in the league we need to make sure that in the end, we qualify for the Champions League."

Slot acknowledged the difficulty of the Amex fixture whilst accepting that Liverpool, as a club of their stature, should have managed a result. He was particularly critical of the Tottenham draw, viewing that outcome as more problematic than the Brighton loss. "As much as I dislike us losing here today, Brighton away has always been a difficult one and will always be a difficult one as long as they keep bringing in so many good players," he said. "But there are other games where we should have picked up more points, like last week against Tottenham. That is far more unacceptable than this. But even away at Brighton, a club like Liverpool should be able to get a result."
