Liverpool in Frantic Push to Land Leipzig Winger Diomande Ahead of World Cup Deadline

With Mohamed Salah heading for the exit at Anfield this summer, Liverpool have zeroed in on RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande as their prime target to fill the Egyptian's considerable shoes. The Merseyside club are now in overdrive to get the deal across the line, with Fenway Sports Group pushing hard to beat off rival suitors and wrap things up within the next fortnight.

The 19-year-old Spanish winger only arrived at Leipzig from Leganes a year ago, but his explosive breakthrough this season has caught the attention of Europe's elite. Operating predominantly on the right flank, Diomande has notched 13 goals and 10 assists across 36 appearances in all competitions, making him a natural successor to Salah in Arne Slot's setup.

Liverpool's desperation to get business done stems from the calendar: they want the transfer finalised before the 2026 World Cup kicks off on June 11. Standing in their way, though, are Manchester City—who will operate under new boss Enzo Maresca following Pep Guardiola's departure—and Paris Saint-Germain, both keen admirers of the teenager's talents.

The price tag is eye-watering. Sport Bild suggests Leipzig could demand as much as €150 million (£130m) for their prized asset, with the German club keen to extend his contract, which currently runs until 2030.

Yet Diomande has already made his feelings clear on the prospect of moving to Merseyside. Back in January, he spoke candidly about his affection for the club: "I want to play at Anfield, I want to play for Liverpool. I'm a big Liverpool fan. My father's dream is to see me play for Liverpool."

Speaking more recently on the transfer speculation and astronomical valuations, the winger struck a philosophical note. "I heard about the price, but I don't know if it's going to be okay for everyone to pay that," he mused. "I'm not going to say Paris, Liverpool or Real Madrid. But it would be a good idea to play for big clubs. Everyone has ambitions and every day you want to go higher."

He continued with a reflective take on his trajectory and what drives him: "Football is my life, and my life is about taking risks. We're alive, but we never know what might happen. I am African, I am a believer. I believe in God, I work. Whatever the club, I am ready to fight every day to win my place, to give my best. That's what I've always done. That's what I know how to do."
