Liverpool's €100m Camavinga Gambit: Realistic or Wishful Thinking?

The rumour mill has churned out another Liverpool-Real Madrid transfer yarn, this time centring on Eduardo Camavinga and a supposed "unbeatable offer" worth around €100 million. Cue the inevitable speculation—and cue Fabrizio Romano to pour cold water all over it.

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, the Reds have lodged a proposal for the French midfielder that Real Madrid's hierarchy finds genuinely difficult to dismiss. The club, so the story goes, faces a genuine dilemma: Camavinga was long considered a cornerstone of their present and future, yet his recent form has raised eyebrows about his suitability as a midfield leader. A nine-figure payout would fund reinforcements elsewhere or fund an arrival with more immediate impact. Add in the intensifying competition for places in midfield, and the narrative practically writes itself.

Here's the thing, though: it almost certainly doesn't happen.

The 23-year-old has already been through this rodeo more times than most. Camavinga was a Liverpool target during his Rennes days before Real Madrid swooped in around 2021 for approximately £28 million. Since then, he's accumulated 210 appearances across all competitions for the Spanish giants over five seasons, proving his worth through positional flexibility at centre-midfield and full-back. Yet somehow, his name keeps bobbing up in Premier League transfer gossip whenever a Spanish publication needs clicks.

Enter Romano, who has essentially waved away both the Camavinga speculation and similar noise surrounding Aurélien Tchouameni. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the transfer specialist made clear that whilst Chelsea might scout midfield options—they certainly looked in January—Tchouameni remains a cornerstone at the Bernabéu. His wages alone represent a barrier, quite apart from his status in Carlo Ancelotti's plans.

On Camavinga specifically, Romano was equally dismissive. Yes, some observers have floated the notion that the Frenchman could slot in as a Casemiro replacement. Fantastic idea on paper. But Real Madrid, he stressed, have no intention of reshuffling their midfield blueprint. If anything, they'd sooner add depth than trim it.

"Still a long time before the summer," Romano concluded, before adding his customary caveat: any genuine developments will be reported as they break. Until then, Liverpool's alleged offer belongs firmly in the realm of speculation.
