Konate Snubs Madrid for Chelsea as Liverpool Turn to Rennes Prospect

Liverpool's attempts to keep hold of Ibrahima Konate have hit the rocks, with the French defender poised to swap Anfield for Stamford Bridge when his contract expires this summer.

The Reds have spent months trying to convince Konate to put pen to paper on fresh terms, but the centre-back and his representatives have repeatedly rebuffed their overtures—even when Liverpool tabled what they considered their most generous offer yet. The latest package, laden with an attractive basic salary, failed to move the needle.

Real Madrid, sensing an opportunity to land a cut-price defensive reinforcement, had circled Konate as a potential starter for next season. The Spanish giants were reportedly prepared to sweeten the deal with a €15m signing-on fee, viewing him as a more appealing prospect than Nico Schlotterbeck. However, those hopes have now evaporated.

According to reports from Spain, Konate has made his preference clear: he intends to remain within the Premier League rather than venture abroad. His representatives have indicated that he's keen to stay competing in what he considers football's most compelling league, and Chelsea has emerged as his destination of choice.

The Londoners are undertaking another wholesale defensive overhaul—a recurring theme under Todd Boehly's stewardship—and have already made contact with Konate's camp. The deal is understood to be close to completion.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have already lined up their replacement. Jeremy Jacquet, the Rennes prospect who agreed to join the club in January, is being positioned as Konate's long-term successor at centre-back.

Transfer analyst Fabrizio Romano has shed light on Madrid's position, revealing that Real Madrid mothballed their pursuit of Konate several months back, around November. "The situation is still on standby," Romano explained on his YouTube channel. "Real Madrid will certainly be busy shopping for defenders, but nothing is currently advanced. If Konate fails to agree new terms at Liverpool, we'll see what develops."

Former Liverpool defender Markus Babbel has long argued that Konate should resist any temptation to depart Anfield. Speaking previously, Babbel suggested that the pressures of playing for Real Madrid—the world's biggest club—would prove overwhelming. "Liverpool is one big family," he reflected. "You can earn excellent money there, play in the world's best league, and enjoy a fantastic style of football. Real Madrid might be the biggest club on the planet, but they're not the best team, and I can't see that changing soon. Why would you leave that?"
