How Real Madrid Stole Konate From Under Liverpool's Nose in Summer Saga

The Ibrahima Konate situation has taken quite the turn. Just weeks ago, it appeared the Liverpool centre-back was genuinely keen on putting pen to paper on fresh terms at Anfield. Real Madrid had seemingly fallen away. Then, rather suddenly, everything shifted.

By Tuesday, the picture had crystallised: Konate is heading to the Bernabéu on a free transfer, with a four-year deal in the pipeline—pending Florentino Pérez's re-election as club president. It's a move that came together after the Spanish giants re-engaged in the pursuit, having initially stepped back when questions arose about the Frenchman's form during Liverpool's 2025/26 campaign.

The French defender himself had suggested not long ago that he was "close to an agreement" with Liverpool on a new contract. Those negotiations, however, ultimately came to nothing. His existing deal expires at the end of June, leaving him free to depart.

What makes this particularly intriguing is the journey that got us here. Sources close to the situation have suggested the whole affair has been "pretty crazy" in its twists and turns. Around a month before the Real Madrid breakthrough, Konate appeared to be engaging positively with Liverpool's offer. The sense at that point was that staying put made sense. Meanwhile, his representatives were quietly keeping other channels open—a move that has now proven rather prescient.

Before Real Madrid's return to the conversation, the 25-year-old had been fielding interest from other quarters. Manchester United and Chelsea both featured in his considerations, and Bayern Munich was also in the mix. Saudi Arabian clubs had tabled offers too, though these were shelved once the Madrid opportunity materialised.

For Liverpool, this represents a defensive setback. While Konate is hardly irreplaceable—his 2025/26 season was hardly a vintage one—his departure still leaves the club thin on the ground at centre-back. Incoming manager Andoni Iraola, who takes over the reins next season, is already understood to be plotting potential replacements as he prepares for what's being billed as a significant summer rebuild.
