Jacquet's Injury Nightmare: Liverpool's £60m January Gamble Dealt Cruel Blow

The Premier League champions' January business has taken an ominous turn after their latest acquisition picked up a significant injury just days after the transfer was sealed.

Jeremy Jacquet, the 20-year-old defensive prospect who completed his move from Rennes earlier in the week, was forced from the field during Saturday evening's Ligue 1 fixture against RC Lens with a shoulder problem. The deal, valued at £55m plus £5m in add-ons, represented Liverpool's statement of intent in the transfer market, but the timing of this setback couldn't be worse.

The young Frenchman had impressed sufficiently for Rennes this season to attract attention from multiple suitors, notably Chelsea, before opting for Merseyside. He was scheduled to remain with the French outfit until the summer before linking up with Arne Slot's squad. His appearance against Lens marked his first outing since the move was confirmed.

Despite showing promising form in the match itself, Jacquet's evening turned sour when he departed the pitch visibly troubled by the shoulder complaint. Rennes manager Habib Beye subsequently confirmed the gravity of the situation, describing the injury as "quite serious" and offering no indication of when the defender might return to action.

"For Jeremy, it's his shoulder, and for Abdelhamid, it's muscular," Beye explained. "We'll have time to see, but it's definitely quite serious for both of them."

The injury is expected to rule Jacquet out of Rennes' forthcoming Ligue 1 encounter against Paris Saint-Germain, with the timeline for his recovery currently unclear.

Jacquet's preference for Liverpool over Chelsea stemmed partly from the Blues' overcrowded defensive ranks at Stamford Bridge. At Anfield, the prospect of competing for a starting berth appeared considerably brighter, with Ibrahima Konate's contract expiring this summer and Virgil van Dijk's long-term centre-back partner potentially departing.

The injury situation adds another layer of intrigue to Konate's future. Real Madrid were previously keen on acquiring the Frenchman as a free agent but withdrew their interest earlier this season following a dip in his performances. However, his form has recovered markedly since December, and the Spanish giants are unlikely to have forgotten about him entirely.

Madrid remain in the market for defensive reinforcements this summer and have been monitoring the free-agent landscape closely. Their previous targets included Marc Guehi, who recently joined Manchester City, and Dayot Upamecano, who is reported to have agreed fresh terms at Bayern Munich. With two of their three primary options now unavailable, a renewed approach for Konate would hardly constitute a shock.

Liverpool, meanwhile, face Manchester City on Sunday with their side currently sitting sixth in the Premier League standings.
