The wheels appear to be coming off at Anfield, and now it seems one of their marquee acquisitions wants out. Alexander Isak has instructed his agents to broker an escape route from Liverpool come the summer window, according to reports emanating from Spain.

The timing couldn't be more awkward for Arne Slot's side, who find themselves languishing in fifth place after a dismal 2-1 defeat to Brighton on Saturday. It's hardly the trajectory the club envisioned when they splashed out over £400m on new talent last summer, banking on reinforcements that would cement their Premier League title-winning form from the previous campaign.

Instead, the big-money signings have largely disappointed and, in some respects, have made the Reds a weaker proposition. Isak, acquired from Newcastle United for a British record £125m, has contributed precious little to that narrative. The Swedish striker has been sidelined since early December with a broken fibula, having already missed four matches earlier in the season through adductor problems.

Yet despite his injury travails, the forward has apparently decided his future lies elsewhere. Spanish outlets claim that Isak has made his position abundantly clear to those in his inner circle: he's ready for a fresh start after barely twelve months at Merseyside.

The striker has zeroed in on a specific target. Barcelona tops his wishlist, with Isak believing the Catalan club's football philosophy would unlock his potential in ways the Premier League hasn't managed. While the Camp Nou outfit has previously expressed admiration for his talents, they've never tabled a formal bid. That could change, with Isak reportedly prepared to smooth the path towards a switch.

However, any such deal represents far from a straightforward transaction. Liverpool, having invested so heavily in the player's services, are in no mood to wave him through the exit without a fight. The Merseysiders will demand compensation befitting their outlay, meaning Barcelona would face a substantial bill to prise him away.

The real question now rests with the Anfield hierarchy. Do they grant the player his wish and cut their losses, or do they roll the dice on a player returning from a lengthy injury layoff?

Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has urged patience with Isak's recovery. Speaking to Casino.org, Owen cautioned supporters against expecting immediate dividends upon the forward's return.
