Konate to Leave Liverpool as Contract Talks Collapse

Ibrahima Konate's Liverpool future has been resolved—and not in the way the French defender had hoped. The centre-back will leave Anfield when his contract expires next month, with negotiations having failed to produce a breakthrough.

Just a few weeks ago, Konate had suggested an agreement was within touching distance. Speaking in April, he expressed optimism about his situation: "My future? There are many things people have said but for a long time we have spoken with the club and we are close to an agreement," he said at the time. "I think everyone wished for that for as long as possible but we are in a good way. There is a big chance I'm here next season. This is what I always wanted."

The 27-year-old had also drawn parallels with how Liverpool had handled previous renewals, noting: "With Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah last season it was exactly the same. I think they signed the contract in April and this is maybe how the club want it."

That optimism has evaporated. Konate's contract runs until July 1st, and no new terms have been agreed upon. Journalists Ben Jacobs and Alex Crook have reported that the defender is "expected to leave Liverpool," with no deal having materialised despite his claims of being close to one just weeks earlier.

The breakdown appears to stem from financial disagreements. According to reports, a "substantial divide" remained between the two parties regarding signing-on fees and agent payments—complications that were exacerbated by Konate's status as an impending free agent, which naturally strengthened his negotiating hand. Liverpool made attempts to find common ground recently, but the club has now accepted that keeping the defender beyond the summer is simply not going to happen.

The situation marks a notable turn for Konate, whose form has deteriorated significantly over the past year. Once among the Premier League's standout centre-backs, he has become a weak link in Liverpool's defence during this campaign—a decline that may have cost him a move to Real Madrid on a free transfer. He has attracted interest from other European heavyweights, however, and will have no shortage of suitors when he becomes available.
