Gerrard's Liverpool Dream Fading as Slot Brushes Off Exit Speculation

The prospect of Steven Gerrard returning to Anfield as Liverpool manager looks increasingly remote, with former Reds striker Emile Heskey suggesting the prospect has effectively died.

Gerrard had long been touted as a natural successor to manage his boyhood club, particularly after his impressive spell at Rangers. Yet his stock has taken considerable damage following disappointing stints at Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq. Despite these setbacks, recent weeks have seen fresh chatter linking the Liverpool legend with a shock return to the dugout, with reports claiming he stood ready to parachute in as emergency head coach should Arne Slot's position become untenable.

That narrative has lost considerable momentum. Slot has weathered the storm following Liverpool's commanding Champions League performance against Galatasaray—their standout display of the 2025/26 campaign. When quizzed about extending his contract beyond 2027, the Dutch boss delivered a characteristically wry response to those circling with speculation.

"Is this how football works? We win on time, and now we're talking about my contract?" Slot said with a smile.

He went on to clarify that Liverpool's recent form had been better than the narrative suggested. "We didn't win one time, by the way, although people try to generate that feeling, we won more than everybody thinks in the last one or two months," he explained.

Slot's focus remains fixed on the immediate challenges ahead. With Brighton next on the fixture list and Liverpool's league position far from ideal, he emphasized the need for sustained effort through the run-in. "My focus is completely on Brighton, and three days ago it was more on how can we get something positive out of this season," he said. "Now we've reached the quarter-final, that's positive, now we have to make the next step in the league because we don't have the greatest position in the league. It's going to be a fight until the end of the season."

When pressed on contract discussions, Slot made clear such matters remain secondary to performance. "We don't talk about contracts of players here, so it would be a surprise if we talk about contracts for managers over here," he noted.

Heskey's assessment of Gerrard's prospects proved damning. Speaking to GOAL, the former striker suggested the window for the Liverpool icon had largely closed. "I think that dream is dead at this moment. Well, dying or died," he said.

The ex-forward drew parallels with Michael Carrick's trajectory at Manchester United, noting that Gerrard requires a return to the coaching trenches rather than an immediate leap into the top job. "Stevie's got to really be back in coaching, managing and being on the sidelines," Heskey explained. "I think it's finding the right club, finding the right system, finding the right coaches that you've got to work with because it's not always about you."

Heskey reflected on what made Jurgen Klopp such a success at Anfield—the German's ability to lead a collective effort rather than operating in isolation. "You've got to remember Jurgen was the leader of a pack. He wasn't just that man. He did everything. He led people to do and he was moving people around and making sure that they were doing certain things and he was giving them autonomy as well to do certain things. It's not always about you. You've just got to get the right people."
