Saudi Clubs Circle as Salah Departs Liverpool: Al-Ittihad Lead the Charge

The Salah saga has taken another turn this week, with Liverpool and their star forward jointly announcing his exit from Anfield come the summer window. The Egyptian's two-year deal, signed last year and running through 2027, has been cut short after a dramatic dip in form this campaign—and both parties have agreed it's time to move on.

For Salah, stepping away on free-agent terms opens up a world of possibilities. European heavyweights have reportedly switched to high alert, sensing an opportunity to secure a world-class talent without a transfer fee. Yet the smart money appears to be pointing in a rather different direction.

Al-Ittihad, the Saudi Pro League powerhouse, are positioned as the frontrunners in this particular race. The club's previous £150 million approach in September 2023 was rebuffed by Liverpool, but they're now circling again with renewed intent. Other Saudi outfits—Al Hilal, Al Qadsiah, and Neom among them—are also monitoring the situation, though Al-Ittihad look most likely to push the hardest.

Reports suggest negotiations with the Riyadh-based club are already well advanced. The Saudis are on the hunt for a marquee signing to fill the void left by Karim Benzema's switch to Al Hilal in February, and Salah represents precisely the calibre of name they're seeking. Al Qadsiah possess the financial muscle to pose a genuine threat to Al-Ittihad's pursuit, but few others in the kingdom appear ready to mount a serious challenge.

Interestingly, Al Hilal and Al Nassr—where Cristiano Ronaldo has been ensconced since 2023—are not expected to enter the fray, nor is Al Ahli. That leaves Al-Ittihad with a relatively clear run at their man, assuming the 33-year-old opts for the Saudi route over any potential European suitors.

Back at Liverpool, recruitment work is already underway to identify a long-term replacement for the departing winger. The club and Salah have managed to keep things cordial throughout this process, which should mean no lingering bad blood as both parties head in different directions.
