Iraola's Five-Man Summer Wish List: Liverpool Plot Overhaul in Three Key Areas

Liverpool are preparing for a significant summer restructuring under their new manager Andoni Iraola, with five key targets identified across three problem areas of the pitch.
The Merseyside club's dramatic downturn after last season's Premier League triumph has prompted urgent action, despite having splashed around £450m on reinforcements just twelve months ago. With Araola's appointment now reportedly confirmed, the focus shifts to assembling a squad capable of executing his high-intensity football philosophy.
The Targets
ESPN's reporting reveals Liverpool's summer shopping list centres on attacking reinforcements and defensive cover. An elite winger tops the priority list, with RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande among those being tracked, though competition from Europe's elite is expected. Paris Saint-Germain's Bradley Barcola has also caught their attention, while West Ham's Jarrod Bowen represents a more battle-hardened alternative to complement younger signings.
Midfield recruitment is equally crucial, with Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton identified as a key target. Inter Milan's right-back Denzel Dumfries is also on the radar, his €25 million release clause active from July presenting a potential bargain.
The Departures
Beyond Konate's confirmed exit, Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson are also heading for the door. Goalkeeper Alisson Becker, midfielder Curtis Jones, winger Federico Chiesa and defender Joe Gomez are all candidates to leave Anfield this summer.
The Scale of the Task
Athletic correspondent James Pearce underscored the magnitude of Iraola's challenge. "All season, Liverpool have been blighted by a lack of pace and dynamism in wide areas," Pearce told talkSPORT. "They need at least one winger, if not two."
The injury situation compounds matters. Hugo Ekitike faces months sidelined with a ruptured Achilles, while Alexander Isak's first year has offered little reassurance about his long-term viability. Midfield physicality remains a glaring weakness, potentially worsened should Curtis Jones depart for Inter Milan.
Defensively, the picture is equally concerning. With Konate gone and Joe Gomez potentially following, Liverpool believe their centre-back stocks remain adequate thanks to Virgil van Dijk, Giovanni Leoni's return from injury, and Jeremy Jacquet's arrival from Rennes—though Pearce suggests another signing wouldn't go amiss.
Right-back has become a genuine crisis point following Conor Bradley's serious knee injury, forcing midfielders into unfamiliar positions and weakening the engine room in the process.
"There's a huge amount to sort out," Pearce concluded, "and that is why the Iraola one makes sense because he's available. You can get him in the door quickly as well, which is important because the clock is ticking with the amount that needs sorting out this summer."
