Liverpool Make Bold Move for Senesi as Bournemouth Centre-Back Eyes Summer Exit

Liverpool have made a significant push to land Bournemouth centre-back Marcos Senesi on a free transfer ahead of the summer window, according to reports, with the Reds now competing alongside Chelsea and Tottenham for the Argentine's signature.

The Merseyside outfit's defensive recruitment has been a thorny issue in recent months. They failed to secure Marc Guehi last summer when Crystal Palace withdrew from negotiations at the final hurdle, whilst summer signing Giovanni Leoni's season-ending injury in September left them stretched at the back. With Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate as their primary centre-backs, Joe Gomez has shouldered much of the backup burden.

Liverpool have already wrapped up a deal to bring Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes, but they're actively hunting for additional defensive reinforcements heading into the transfer market. That search has now led them to the Vitality Stadium, where Senesi's contract is set to expire at the end of June.

Matteo Moretto, speaking on Fabrizio Romano's YouTube channel, revealed that Senesi will depart Bournemouth as a free agent. "He won't renew and will leave on a free transfer – Bournemouth already know this," the Italian journalist confirmed.

Moretto highlighted that despite interest from Italian clubs, Senesi is determined to remain in the Premier League. "I'm told—and it's confirmed 100%—that the Argentine defender intends to stay in the Premier League," he stated.

The 28-year-old has impressed at Bournemouth following his return to fitness, having previously seen his career hampered by injury setbacks. "His career was slowed by some significant injuries, but once he regained fitness and form, he's shown all his quality in the Premier League," Moretto noted.

Chelsea and Tottenham have already been linked with Senesi, but Moretto suggested Liverpool's recent involvement has become a serious threat. "Beyond the two clubs I already mentioned—Chelsea and Tottenham, especially Tottenham, Liverpool have also entered the race quite strongly in recent days," he explained. "Keep an eye on Liverpool, because they're expected to make new contacts for Marcos Senesi."

Former Scotland international Ally McCoist believes Liverpool's problems run far deeper than just the back line. Speaking on talkSPORT, he insisted the club must overhaul their spine entirely this summer.

"They just haven't handled losing the players they have, and the players they've brought in, whether it's been injury or lack of form," McCoist said. "They need strengthening in my opinion, certainly need right up the spine I think – centre-forward, centre-midfielder and a centre-back."

McCoist pointed to recent signings struggling to make an immediate impact, noting that players like Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, and Jeremie Frimpong have taken time to settle, whilst injuries to younger defensive prospects have compounded matters.
