Van de Ven Eyes Liverpool Switch as Reds Weigh Centre-Back Options; Guehi Prefers Summer Move

Liverpool are bracing for a busy period in the transfer market, with significant defensive reinforcement on the agenda. The Reds' spending spree last summer—which exceeded £400m—has left them still searching for solutions in key areas, particularly in central defence.

The situation at the back demands urgent attention. Ibrahima Konate's contract enters its final year, creating uncertainty over his long-term future, whilst the club must eventually plan for life beyond captain Virgil van Dijk. These circumstances have prompted a scouting mission that's casting a wide net across Europe's top talent.

Enter Micky van de Ven. The Tottenham defender, who arrived at Spurs for around £43m back in 2023, has become something of a redemption story after earlier being earmarked for Anfield before his north London move materialised instead. Despite battling injuries throughout his Spurs tenure, the Dutch international has nonetheless emerged as a standout performer at a club struggling in the Premier League pecking order.

According to reports, Van de Ven believes he has outgrown his current surroundings. Recent speculation suggested the 24-year-old is keen to depart Spurs this winter, and now transfer insiders claim the 'elite superstar' has set his sights firmly on Liverpool, viewing the Reds as his 'dream destination'.

Whether Van de Ven arrives remains to be seen, but Liverpool could feasibly recruit two centre-backs given their defensive demands. This keeps Marc Guehi in the picture, despite the Reds' failure to land the England international last summer.

However, Guehi's timeline tells a different story. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has clarified the Crystal Palace defender's positioning, revealing that his "real intention" has consistently pointed towards a summer transfer on a free deal rather than a mid-season switch.

"Liverpool are really pushing," Romano explained on his YouTube channel. "Arsenal are calling because Arteta is a big fan. With these two clubs insisting, Bayern also having some meetings for Guehi, but Upamecano is expected to sign a new contract."

The plot thickens further with Manchester City's involvement. Romano indicated that Pep Guardiola's side intend to make a concrete play for Guehi in January, prepared to strike an agreement with Palace should the player give the green light.

"Man City will try also next week," Romano continued. "If the player accepts, Manchester City are prepared to make an agreement with Crystal Palace – they don't see any problems with that."

Yet Guehi appears unmoved by the January noise. His preference remains steadfast: a summer departure as a free agent, allowing him to orchestrate his next move without financial complications for his current club. Whether Liverpool, Arsenal, Bayern, or City can sway him from that plan remains the burning question.
