Liverpool Join Barcelona in Chase for Free Agent Senesi as Bournemouth Defender Eyes Fresh Start

Liverpool have thrown their hat into the ring to land Bournemouth's Marcos Senesi this summer, joining a growing list of suitors eyeing the Argentine defender as a free agent when his contract expires.

The 28-year-old has made clear to the Cherries that he's ready to move on and test himself elsewhere, with Barcelona long considered his preferred destination. However, the Catalan club's murky financial waters have forced Senesi's representatives to keep all options on the table—and that's where Liverpool come in.

Senesi has been a reliable performer for Bournemouth this campaign, even chipping in with four Premier League assists from his defensive berth. His consistency hasn't gone unnoticed, but a summer clearout of Bournemouth's backline has looked inevitable for some time now.

For Liverpool, the appeal is obvious. Virgil van Dijk's decline and uncertainty over Ibrahima Konate's future means Arne Slot's side desperately need fresh legs at centre-back. While the Reds have already secured Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet over the past year, another addition appears essential.

According to reports, Liverpool have been in contact with Senesi's camp, though they're far from the only Premier League outfit to do so. Barcelona had identified Senesi as a potential alternative to Alessandro Bastoni, but the club's ongoing planning chaos means nothing is certain from the Spanish side's perspective.

Tim Sherwood, the former Premier League manager, has meanwhile put forward an alternative target: Tottenham's Micky van de Ven. Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, Sherwood suggested the Spurs defender represents the "obvious choice" for Liverpool's left centre-back position.

"There's not many other options out there," Sherwood explained. "You could look at Jarrad Branthwaite, but he's not leaving Everton. Van de Ven's got all the attributes to become a top player, and playing alongside someone like Van Dijk would really help his development and leadership."

Sherwood reckons the partnership with an experienced winner like Van Dijk could accelerate Van de Ven's growth, though he stopped short of calling the Dutchman a born leader just yet. Learning from proven winners, he suggested, could be exactly what Van de Ven needs to fulfil his considerable potential at Anfield.
