Liverpool Ready to Cash In on Gakpo as Klopp Link Emerges

Liverpool are willing to part ways with Cody Gakpo during the upcoming summer transfer window, with Tottenham Hotspur among the clubs reportedly circling the Dutch winger—though a move to Spurs faces complications given their current predicament.

Gakpo's situation has deteriorated markedly since penning fresh terms last August, when Bayern Munich were sniffing around. At that point, the 26-year-old spoke glowingly about his contentment on Merseyside, insisting he felt settled and delighted with the defending Premier League champions.

The narrative has shifted dramatically. Despite notching 25 Premier League starts this season, Gakpo has managed just six goals and three assists—a return that hardly sets pulses racing. His Champions League contributions tell a similar story: two goals and one assist across nine appearances in the 2025/26 campaign.

Signed from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023 for a total package of £45million, the winger's underperformance has prompted movement behind the scenes. Whilst Liverpool aren't actively pushing him toward the exit, intermediaries are actively shopping Gakpo around to potential suitors across both the Premier League and continental Europe.

Tottenham's emergence as a potential destination raises eyebrows, however. The north London side's relegation scrap makes a switch there an unlikely proposition for a player accustomed to title-winning football. Dropping into the Championship would represent a curious step for anyone of Gakpo's pedigree.

Enter RB Leipzig and, more intriguingly, Jurgen Klopp. The former Liverpool manager now holds the position of Head of Global Soccer for Red Bull GmbH, and his longstanding admiration for Gakpo's talents could prove the decisive factor should Leipzig decide to enter the bidding war. Klopp's presence within the Red Bull structure may yet play a role in orchestrating a move to the Bundesliga club.

One source has gone further still, declaring the winger is effectively available for transfer. Liverpool, meanwhile, are believed to be eyeing alternative targets, with Michael Olise among their targets as they reshape their attacking options.
