Liverpool Edge Closer to Diomande Deal as Manchester United's Hopes Fade

The Reds appear to have been handed a significant boost in their pursuit of RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande, with initial contact already established between the clubs ahead of the summer window.

Liverpool's campaign has unravelled spectacularly since capturing their 20th Premier League crown last term. Despite that title success, the Merseyside outfit underwent wholesale changes over the off-season, distributing more than £400m across signings while moving on Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Jarell Quansah and Harvey Elliott.

Arne Slot's recruitment drive proved eye-watering in ambition. The club shattered the British transfer record twice to secure Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, whilst also backing their boss to the tune of securing Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Giovanni Leoni. Few anticipated such investment would yield anything other than sustained excellence, yet Liverpool have made a hash of defending their domestic crown.

The title was surrendered before New Year arrived, leaving the club now scrambling simply to secure Champions League football. Slot faces mounting pressure over his future, with questions swirling about whether he'll still be in the dugout come next season.

When the transfer market reopens, reinforcements will arrive. One key target could well involve finding Mohamed Salah's successor, with the Egyptian winger persistently linked with a lucrative Saudi move.

Enter Diomande. The Leipzig forward has been earmarked as a potential solution, despite also featuring on Manchester United and Bayern Munich's radar. The 100 million euro (£86m) valuation reflects the teenager's burgeoning reputation.

According to reports, Liverpool have initiated dialogue with the German club, with Diomande now officially placed on the summer shopping list. The player himself is understood to be enthusiastic about the prospect of joining the Reds, with senior figures at Anfield equally receptive to the possibility.

"The young forward is eager to join the Reds, and the top brass appear equally enthusiastic," one source stated. "Talks have already commenced between the clubs for a summer move."

Leipzig won't part with their asset lightly. The club are holding firm at valuations exceeding $100m, with Diomande contracted through June 2030. For Liverpool, such an outlay on a developing talent represents long-term strategic thinking—particularly should Salah depart following the World Cup.

German journalist Christian Falk reckons Liverpool have received a "clear signal" that business can be concluded this summer. Falk noted that whilst Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool all possess the financial firepower required, Bayern Munich appear to have stepped back from the race.

"Bayern can't afford Diomande at this point because Luis Diaz is the established first-choice on the left wing," Falk explained. "Bayern Munich don't need a 'Plan A', they need a 'Plan B'; so €100m for a Plan B behind Diaz is just too much money."

He continued: "He's clearly got a lot of potential. But it's just not enough to go on to commit to such a huge fee at this point in time."

That retreat from Bavaria significantly improves Liverpool's negotiating position—and their chances of landing the Leipzig starlet come summer.
