Slot Under Pressure: Champions League Lifeline as Liverpool Board Eyes Summer Review

"For Arne Slot the situation is quite clear," Romano explained. "Being in the Champions League next season will be absolutely crucial for him. If Liverpool will not be in the Champions League next season I think this could bring them into an important review in the summer."

The board's plan is straightforward. Rather than act now, they intend to conduct a comprehensive internal review come June, at which point the Champions League qualification question will become the defining factor in whether Slot remains in the hot seat. Though the club have consistently backed their manager through difficult spells, Romano suggests the summer reckoning could prove decisive.

"At the moment they've always been protecting Slot, even in difficult moments when the situation was really complicated, always showing the trust, but at the end of the season there will be an internal review and we will see," Romano said.

For now, all focus must remain on the pitch—both in Europe's elite competition and Liverpool's push for a top-four finish. A trophy would provide some respite, but make no mistake: failure to secure Champions League football would almost certainly spell the end of Slot's Anfield tenure.

Alonso Waiting in the Wings

Should the worst come to pass, Xabi Alonso appears to be the leading candidate to take over at Liverpool. The former Real Sociedad boss has already turned down an approach from Olympique Marseille, choosing instead to bide his time for what he considers a more suitable opportunity.

Romano confirmed that Alonso is keen to return to management imminently rather than take an extended break, but he's selective about his next move. The Spaniard is monitoring the landscape for managerial changes across Europe's top clubs in the coming months, waiting to see if a position aligns with his ambitions.

For Liverpool fans, the implication is clear: Slot has until May to save his job, and nothing short of Champions League qualification will suffice.
