Liverpool's Diomande Dash: Reds Edge PSG With Financial Muscle and Player Appeal

The race for Yan Diomande is heating up, and Liverpool appear to be gaining the upper hand over their Parisian rivals in a battle that extends well beyond the transfer fee alone.

The RB Leipzig winger, just 19 but already one of world football's most lethal operators in one-on-one situations, has emerged as the Reds' long-term solution to replacing Mohamed Salah. The Ivory Coast international announced himself on the global stage during his nation's World Cup opener against Ecuador, where he thoroughly dismantled Arsenal's Piero Hincapie in the opening period.

Leipzig are reluctant sellers, naturally, but David Ornstein's reporting confirmed that Liverpool have initiated formal discussions with the Bundesliga outfit. The Germans are holding firm at a €130m (£112m) valuation, though they've indicated they'd consider offers in that ballpark.

PSG represent genuine competition, yet the consensus among those tracking the move suggests Diomande favours a Merseyside move. The prospect of playing under Andoni Iraola holds particular appeal for the teenager.

Two Reasons to Back Liverpool

According to Fabrizio Romano's latest assessment, Liverpool possess two significant edges over their French counterparts. First and foremost, the Reds are prepared to table more substantial terms than PSG—both in the transfer fee itself and crucially in the contract offer extended to the player.

Secondly, PSG find themselves hamstrung by squad constraints. The Parisian club cannot accommodate Diomande without offloading Bradley Barcola, a scenario they're far from enthusiastic about engineering. Romano explained that PSG must first determine whether a suitable bid will materialise for Barcola, or whether they'll simply retain him as part of their long-term project.

"The battle is on between Liverpool and PSG," Romano stated. "But the advantage for Liverpool is not just financial, because from my understanding they're ready to offer more than PSG in terms of contract to the player, in order to attract him."

He continued: "PSG are still waiting to find the right solution with Bradley Barcola. They have to understand if there'll be the right proposal for Barcola, or whether they can keep him and continue with him. This depends on the value of the bids."

The transfer guru added that whilst PSG remain genuinely interested in Diomande, their reluctance to shift Barcola unless presented with an irresistible offer provides Liverpool with a meaningful opening. Meanwhile, the Reds are actively pushing their case behind closed doors, acutely aware of their rivals' interest.

"PSG are not desperate to sell Barcola," Romano concluded. "But at the moment, Liverpool behind the scenes are pushing and are aware of PSG's interest. PSG remain very keen on Diomande, but they're offering less, so let's see also in terms of numbers."

For Liverpool supporters, the indicators are pointing in the right direction—for now.
