Liverpool Ready to Pursue Wolves' Andre as Slot Eyes Midfield Reinforcements

Arne Slot appears set to flex Liverpool's financial muscles in the transfer market after all, with the Reds poised to table an offer for Wolverhampton Wanderers' Andre. Brazilian media outlets claim the Premier League champions intend to move for the 24-year-old midfielder, even as the Midlands outfit faces an increasingly bleak battle against the drop.

The Brazilian has been on Liverpool's radar since his Fluminense days, when several top-flight outfits—Arsenal, Fulham, and the Reds among them—circled the Copa Libertadores winner. He eventually plumped for Molineux last summer, but with Rob Edwards' side anchored to the bottom after 22 games, an escape route may beckon.

Slot has overseen a spending spree that topped £400m during the previous window following his maiden Premier League title triumph, yet January has thus far yielded no signings despite links to Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi. That drought may be about to end, though Andre represents something of a sideways move given Wolves' predicament.

The Reds are reportedly prepared to meet Wolves' asking price of €30million—approximately £26m—with one eye on the summer market as well. Fluminense stand to pocket 10 per cent of any sale, having negotiated a sell-on clause when flogging Andre for around £18m eighteen months ago. Interest stretches across Europe, with Palmeiras sniffing around, whilst outfits in Italy, Turkey, and France are monitoring developments. Andre remains contracted until 2029.

Yet here lies the rub: does Liverpool genuinely need a midfielder badly enough to justify such an outlay, particularly on a player whose stock may dip further should Wolves suffer the drop? Slot's acknowledged shortcomings lie elsewhere. The absence of defensive depth has haunted his tenure, with the backline shipping 29 goals—a tally matched only by Brentford and Manchester United among the upper echelon. Set-piece defending has been particularly wretched, with 13 goals conceded from dead-ball situations excluding penalties, whilst the Reds have surrendered multiple goals on ten separate occasions.

Marc Guehi's departure to Manchester City closed one avenue, leaving Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk as the primary options. Van Dijk leads the league in clearances, yet Konate's campaign has stuttered, and entering the run-in without bolstering that pairing carries considerable risk.

Should Liverpool proceed with Andre, they'd be investing in midfield when their priorities arguably demand a more defensive-minded approach. After the summer's spending extravaganza, any funds deployed this month might be better served elsewhere.
