Spanish reports suggest Liverpool have now decided to reverse course, opting to retain Slot rather than proceed with their initial plans. Crucially, the outlets claim a verbal understanding had already been struck with Alonso, with an official announcement pencilled in for the season's conclusion. The World Cup winner and two-time European champion had made his position abundantly clear: he would not countenance a mid-season switch.

With Liverpool seemingly pulling the plug on that arrangement, Alonso must now explore alternatives. Chelsea, fresh from parting ways with Liam Rosenior this month, represents an obvious avenue, as does an unnamed Saudi Arabian outfit expressing serious interest.

Sky Sports News correspondent Kaveh Solhekol has made his preference clear regarding Chelsea's next appointment. "The person I would go for would be Xabi Alonso," Solhekol stated. "Given his playing pedigree at the continent's elite institutions and his managerial spell at Real Madrid, I believe he'd command immediate respect from the Chelsea squad. Tactically, he'd be exceptional."

Solhekol acknowledged Alonso's previous experience navigating a fractious dressing room at the Bernabéu, suggesting such experience would prove invaluable in west London—albeit with the caveat that even Chelsea's squad dynamics present a less complex challenge than those at the Spanish capital's powerhouse.
