Liverpool Miss Out on German Wonderkid as Leverkusen Steal Transfer Prize

The Reds' summer of significant departures continues to bring disappointment in the transfer market. After losing Andy Robertson to Tottenham, Ibrahima Konate to Real Madrid, and Mohamed Salah to a European heavyweight, Liverpool's recruitment team has now suffered another setback on the incoming front.

Kennet Eichhorn, the teenage gem from Hertha Berlin, has rejected Merseyside in favour of staying put in Germany. The 16-year-old defensive midfielder has committed his future to Bayer Leverkusen, the reigning Bundesliga champions, bringing an end to what Liverpool believed was a promising pursuit.

Multiple sources have now confirmed the transfer is complete. Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg revealed that Eichhorn has given his final approval, with rejections sent to all interested parties. The deal will see the youngster move via a release clause valued between €8m and €9m, with his contract running until 2031.

Graeme Bailey reported that Liverpool, Manchester City, and Chelsea had all been informed they would not be landing the teenager this summer. The Reds had been particularly optimistic about their chances, having made what insiders described as significant headway in negotiations. The club's well-documented success in developing young talent was positioned as a key selling point.

However, Leverkusen's behind-the-scenes work proved decisive. Managing director Simon Rolfes and director of football Kim Falkenberg orchestrated the capture relatively quietly, outmanoeuvring more celebrated competitors to land one of European football's most sought-after prospects.

David Ornstein, writing for The Athletic, has characterised the move as a "significant coup" for the Bundesliga side, particularly given the calibre of other suitors involved. Few observers had fancied Leverkusen's chances against the financial firepower and profile of English clubs, making the outcome a genuine surprise in the summer transfer window.

Eichhorn, a Germany youth international, will complete his medical and finalise paperwork as the formalities are concluded.
