Liverpool Fend Off Premier League Rivals to Secure Josh Abe on Long-Term Deal

Liverpool have landed a significant academy prize by keeping hold of Josh Abe and fending off serious interest from some of Europe's biggest clubs.

The 15-year-old left-footer, regarded as one of the finest young talents in world football at his age group, has now put pen to paper on scholarship terms with the Reds. A pre-contract agreement for a three-year professional deal will kick in when he turns 17 next July.

The announcement comes at a time when Liverpool have faced considerable scrutiny over their contract management. Trent Alexander-Arnold departed to Real Madrid for just €10m after his deal expired, while this summer alone sees Andy Robertson head to Tottenham, Ibrahima Konate move to Madrid, and Mohamed Salah's future still uncertain. Throughout the 2025/26 campaign, there were genuine concerns Abe would follow suit and leave Anfield.

The interest in the academy graduate was hardly surprising. Real Madrid, Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City all circled the 15-year-old, with Chelsea particularly keen to recoup some loss after Liverpool previously lured Rio Ngumoha from Stamford Bridge. Arsenal's interest was also notable given Abe's known allegiances to the north London club. He was even spotted touring Madrid's Bernabeu at one stage.

Yet Liverpool's hierarchy have successfully convinced the youngster that his best prospects lie at Anfield. The Athletic's James Pearce revealed the scale of the competition: one interested club dangled professional terms worth £50,000 per week in front of Abe. Despite the staggering financial incentive for someone so young, cooler heads prevailed.

Fenway Sports Group technical director Julian Ward led months of negotiations that ultimately persuaded Abe and his family that the pathway to Liverpool's first team offered the superior opportunity. Sources close to the process indicated that the youngster's commitment to staying put was rooted in genuine belief in his prospects at Merseyside rather than any shortage of tempting alternatives elsewhere.

For a club that has recently struggled to retain its own talent, this represents a timely victory in the academy trenches.
