Bastoni Stays Put as Barcelona Bows Out: Liverpool's Defensive Hopes Fade

The Bastoni saga has taken another twist, with Barcelona effectively throwing in the towel on their pursuit of Inter Milan's commanding centre-back, though it does little to improve Liverpool's prospects of landing the Italy international this summer.

The Catalan outfit made a genuine effort to prise the defender away from the Nerazzurri, with sporting director Deco making multiple trips to Milan to negotiate directly. However, their financial ambitions fell well short of Inter's demands. Barcelona tabled a package worth somewhere in the region of 40-45 million euros with add-ons attached, while Inter made clear they would not entertain anything below 60-70 million euros—and crucially, only if Bastoni himself requested a departure.

That price tag and the player's reluctance to force a move proved too steep for Barcelona, who have now shifted their focus elsewhere on the pitch. Real Madrid, similarly credited with interest, have also stepped back from the table after completing moves for Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries.

This leaves Liverpool, Manchester City, and Newcastle United as the remaining Premier League suitors in the hunt. Yet none of them appear willing—or able—to table the sort of offer Inter are demanding at present. The Merseysiders, who appointed Andoni Iraola as their new head coach last week following the sacking of Arne Slot, have already lost Andy Robertson, Mohamed Salah, and Konate from their squad this summer and are desperate to bolster their defensive ranks.

A new centre-back remains a priority despite the earlier agreement to bring in Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet, sealed back in January. Liverpool are also chasing at least one winger following Salah's exit and the underwhelming campaign from Cody Gakpo last season.

However, Bastoni's representatives and Inter show no signs of budging. Inter Milan chief Giuseppe Marotta recently insisted: "Bastoni has absolutely not expressed any desire to leave. He's happy to stay here with us, so we don't need to sell him. I think he'll stay with us for the rest of his career."

With the financial gap between what the English clubs are prepared to spend and what Inter demand looking increasingly unbridgeable, expect the 25-year-old to remain in Milan when the dust settles on this window.
