Defence in Dock as Slot Faces the Axe at Liverpool

The writing appears to be on the wall for Arne Slot at Anfield. Despite a commanding 3-0 Champions League victory over Marseille in midweek, Liverpool's fragility returned with a vengeance on Saturday when Bournemouth snatched a dramatic injury-time winner to secure a 3-2 Premier League triumph.

That defeat marked Liverpool's fifth league match without a win, a run that has seen them slip to fifth place in the table—leapfrogged by Manchester United into the bargain. The deteriorating form has sparked serious questions about Slot's future, with reports suggesting he could be shown the door before the campaign's conclusion, or at the very least face the chop come summer.

Steven Gerrard has been mooted as a potential replacement, though Xabi Alonso—recently relieved of his duties at Real Madrid—appears to be the leading candidate in the frame to take over at Merseyside.

The finger-pointing has begun in earnest, and it's pointing squarely at Liverpool's backline. Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown has laid into the defensive unit, singling out captain Virgil van Dijk and his centre-back partner for failing to provide the bedrock upon which a title-challenging side should be built.

Speaking to Football Insider, Brown didn't mince words: "Arne Slot is facing some serious pressure at Liverpool. They spent a hell of a lot of money in the summer just for results to get work, so then the fingers get pointed at the manager."

He acknowledged that Slot carries credit from his opening season but insisted that's no shield against current failings. "He's obviously got credit in the bank from last season, but if they can't win games then ultimately it's not good enough, and the fans are starting to become frustrated too," Brown explained.

The statistics paint a damning picture. Liverpool have managed just five victories in their last 18 Premier League outings—a return that falls drastically short of the standards expected at a club of their stature.

"The big question mark at Liverpool and a big reason for their form is about their defenders," Brown said. "Their two centre-backs, including Van Dijk, have not been anywhere near good enough and they're dropping points because they don't have that stable foundation."

Even more strikingly, Brown suggested that van Dijk—traditionally viewed as the calm, commanding presence at the heart of defence—has failed to fulfil that role this term. "Nobody really asks questions of Van Dijk, we look at him as the calming presence, but he hasn't been that this season and it's a big problem," he observed.

With defensive solidity proving elusive, the pressure on Slot continues to mount. "It's that lack of defensive stability which has led to pressure on the manager, and if things continue the way they have been, he will be sacked," Brown concluded.
