Liverpool Seal £60m Jacquet Deal as Dual Departure Looms Large

Liverpool have rubber-stamped the acquisition of Jeremy Jacquet from Stade Rennais, with the 20-year-old defender now set to pull on a Reds shirt after the club confirmed the move on Wednesday morning.

The Merseyside outfit had locked in the deal back in early February, agreeing a £60m package comprising an initial £55m plus £5m in performance-related add-ons. Jacquet has committed to a five-year contract with the option of an additional 12 months, effectively tying him to Anfield through to the summer of 2032.

A Liverpool statement confirmed: "The Reds agreed a deal to bring the Frenchman to the club earlier this year and the transfer is set to be ratified in the coming days."

The timing of Jacquet's arrival takes on fresh significance given Ibrahima Konate's departure to Real Madrid. When Liverpool first engineered the pre-agreement, the prospect was for the young Frenchman to develop alongside the 27-year-old rather than replacing him outright. That scenario has now shifted considerably.

Jacquet Explains Chelsea Snub

In securing Jacquet, Liverpool successfully fended off competition from Chelsea to land their target. Speaking in a club interview, the defender outlined his reasoning for choosing the Reds.

"It's a legendary club, and the football philosophy and project really appealed to me," he said. "My family and I believe we have made the right choice and we feel really happy here."

Jacquet also highlighted the prospect of learning from an elite operator. "Of course, I'm really excited to line up alongside a great player like him. I think he's up there with the best centre-backs in the world currently, so I can only learn from him," he added, referring to Virgil van Dijk.

The Exit Strategy

With Jacquet's arrival confirmed and Victor Munoz already secured for £34.5m, Liverpool's summer spending spree is beginning to take shape. However, fresh outgoings appear inevitable to balance the books, particularly as the club hunts for additional investment in midfield and attacking areas.

Andy Robertson has already departed for Tottenham, whilst Konate and Mohamed Salah have also exited without generating transfer revenue for the club.

According to recent reporting, Curtis Jones and Federico Chiesa now represent the most probable departures. Both players will need to sit down with incoming manager Andoni Iraola before any final decisions materialise.

Inter Milan have already tabled two offers for Jones, with their most recent bid hovering around €25m (£21.7m). That falls well short of Liverpool's valuation, with the club believed to be holding out for closer to £40m — a figure that appears optimistic given the midfielder has just one year remaining on his existing terms.

Chiesa's situation presents a similar narrative, with the Italian winger seemingly surplus to requirements as Iraola shapes his squad for the campaign ahead.
