Iraola Confirmed as Liverpool Boss: "It Cannot Be More Attractive Than This"

Liverpool have moved swiftly to replace Arne Slot, confirming on Thursday evening that Andoni Iraola will take the reins at Anfield from next season. The 43-year-old Spaniard departs AFC Bournemouth after three successful Premier League campaigns, most recently guiding the Cherries to a sixth-place finish and European qualification for the first time in their history.

Slot's exit came following a disappointing end to the campaign that saw the Reds slip to fifth in the table, a sharp decline from their title-winning 2024-25 season. The former Feyenoord manager departed on Saturday as results and performances deteriorated.

In his first remarks as Liverpool's incoming head coach, Iraola made no attempt to hide his enthusiasm for the opportunity. "Really excited, really excited," he told club media. "You know about Liverpool, you know it's a big club, a massive club, one of the biggest in the world. But feeling inside and understanding a little bit more of this club, I always thought it's a special club."

The appointment carries obvious appeal for a manager of Iraola's calibre. "The atmosphere, the supporters, the club, the players, the chance for me to coach top-level players, the chance to fight for titles," he continued. "I think it cannot be more attractive than this. It's difficult to find it. So, really excited to start."

His arrival represents a tactical shift, with Iraola renowned for his demanding, high-pressing approach that proved effective during his time at the Vitality Stadium. However, not everyone has greeted the news with unbridled optimism.

Jamie Carragher, Liverpool's former stalwart in defence, has voiced his reservations about the decision. Speaking on The Overlap this week, the pundit expressed concern that Xabi Alonso might have been the superior choice. "If Liverpool chose Iraola over Alonso, it is very worrying for Liverpool," Carragher stated.

The former defender questioned whether the club possessed the right personnel for Iraola's system. "I am not sure Liverpool have the players to play Iraola's high-pressing game," he argued. Carragher had previously indicated he would have retained Slot rather than making a change, particularly when Alonso moved to Chelsea. The Leverkusen manager's credentials, he suggested, were formidable—a stellar playing pedigree, experience under elite coaches, and a trophy-laden spell in Germany, despite a less fruitful stint at Real Madrid.

"With Alonso, you have an incredible playing CV, the managers he has been coached by, what he did at Leverkusen," Carragher reasoned. "He has managed Real Madrid. I know it didn't go well, but he is used to that pressure and scrutiny."

Nonetheless, the decision is made. Iraola will now set about the task of restoring Liverpool to their rightful place atop English football.
