Xabi Alonso has reportedly counselled Florian Wirtz to turn down any overtures from Real Madrid and commit his future to Liverpool, according to reports emerging from Spain.

The pair share a well-established rapport from their time together at Bayer Leverkusen, and Alonso—widely expected to take the reins at Anfield—maintains regular contact with the German international. The incoming Reds boss has made his position abundantly clear: Wirtz belongs on Merseyside, not at the Bernabéu.

Alonso's conviction runs deep. He believes Wirtz possesses the qualities to become the lynchpin of his Liverpool project, while harbouring doubts about the winger's suitability for Madrid's particular demands and playing style.

The backdrop to this intervention is decidedly murky. Liverpool's campaign has unravelled spectacularly this term, with Saturday's 3-2 reverse to Bournemouth marking their seventh league defeat and leaving them languishing in sixth place. The club invested over £400m during the summer window—a remarkable outlay by their standards—to bolster Arne Slot's squad following a maiden Premier League title triumph. Yet the Reds have regressed considerably on the pitch.

Slot's position has come under intense scrutiny. While David Ornstein of The Athletic reported that the club intends to grant their manager breathing room until the summer before making any definitive call, not everyone shares that optimism. Dutch journalist Valentijn Driessen is convinced Slot finds himself in his "final months" at the club, drawing parallels to Louis van Gaal's predicament at Manchester United.

Driessen's analysis is sobering. He recalled how van Gaal dismissed speculation about José Mourinho replacing him in 2016, only to be sacked on the very day he lifted the FA Cup, with Mourinho's appointment following swiftly thereafter. The implication is clear: Liverpool's hierarchy may have already made their decision regarding Slot's future.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, continue circling Wirtz as a potential summer acquisition. Should Alonso's counsel prove persuasive, however, the German will spurn any overtures in favour of establishing himself as Liverpool's creative fulcrum under his former mentor's stewardship.
