Slot's Anfield Future in Doubt as Liverpool Hold Advanced Talks with Alonso

Liverpool's managerial situation has taken a dramatic turn, with reports from Spain suggesting Arne Slot could be dismissed during the international break, with Xabi Alonso lined up as his replacement.

The Reds' disappointing campaign took another hit at the weekend when Brighton inflicted their tenth league defeat of the season. Currently clinging to fifth place, Liverpool now face the prospect of missing out on Champions League football with Chelsea just a point adrift, while Brentford and Everton lurk a mere three points behind.

According to the Spanish reports, Slot's position has come under increasing scrutiny following the Brighton loss, with his job security potentially determined in the coming days. Alonso, the former Real Madrid manager, has emerged as the leading candidate to step in, with the Basque coach reportedly keen to return to management without delay rather than spending time away from the dugout.

Liverpool are understood to be in 'advanced talks' with Alonso, though the club's meticulous approach to recruitment may yet prove a stumbling block. Liverpool Echo reporter Paul Gorst has suggested that any mid-season managerial change would represent a departure from the club's established methodology. When the Reds sought Jurgen Klopp's successor, the process stretched across six months, with the club producing an exhaustive 60-page dossier on Slot before appointing him. Gorst argued that bringing in a temporary replacement, akin to Manchester United's Michael Carrick appointment, would be fundamentally at odds with Liverpool's philosophy. He believes any assessment of Slot's tenure should wait until the campaign's conclusion.

Slot himself has acknowledged the mounting pressure, telling reporters: "It makes complete sense if you've won the league last season and spent £150m – not £450m – that expectations are high. Those expectations were high for the pundits, for the media, for me, for the fans. But still it's not good enough, no matter how many excuses I can come up with. It's still not good enough in the position we're in right now."

The manager remains focused on securing Champions League qualification through a fifth-place finish, while also harbouring hopes of silverware in the Champions League or FA Cup. Whether he'll get the opportunity to pursue those objectives remains very much up in the air.
