Summer Exit Speculation: Liverpool, Man City and Arsenal Emerge as Potential Destinations for Mbappe

The prospect of Kylian Mbappe departing Real Madrid has captured the imagination of the European football world, with several high-profile voices tipping the French superstar for a summer switch to one of three elite clubs.

French radio presenter Cyril Hanouna has made the case for both Liverpool and Manchester City as superior alternatives for the 27-year-old, suggesting his time in the Spanish capital has soured following a disappointing campaign. Hanouna pointed to Mbappe's fractious relationship with Paris Saint-Germain's hierarchy before his free transfer to Madrid in summer 2024, cautioning that crossing powerful figures in football can prove costly.

"If he went to City, he'd be better. He'd be better at City, he'd be better at Liverpool," Hanouna declared on Fun Radio. "Real Madrid, when things start off badly, it's like a love affair."

The Bernabéu outfit are indeed staring down the barrel of a second successive season without silverware, a grim prospect for an institution accustomed to domination. Despite notching an impressive 85 goals and 11 assists across 100 appearances, Mbappe's campaign has been marred by injury troubles and public criticism over his decision to take time away while recovering from a knock sustained against Real Betis. His absence from the recent El Clasico clash with Barcelona due to fitness concerns only intensified the narrative surrounding discord in the capital.

Transfer analyst Pete O'Rourke acknowledged the astronomical challenge any club would face in prising the world's biggest talent away from the Bernabéu. "It would be a huge financial outlay as well for any club if they were looking to sign Mbappe. Transfer fee, wages all included, there's only a certain few clubs who could afford that," he noted on the Transfer Insider podcast.

Arsenal have emerged as a third potential destination, though only under specific circumstances. Former France midfielder Emmanuel Petit suggested the Gunners could tempt Mbappe should they claim the Champions League crown this season, positioning him as an ideal fit for their left-wing berth. "Arsenal would love Kylian Mbappe and he'd be perfect on their left wing," Petit told the London Evening Standard.

However, Petit believes Mbappe's considerable pride may prove the decisive factor keeping him at Madrid. "The only reason I think Mbappe will stay at Real Madrid is because if he leaves without winning a trophy it would make his move a failure. Mbappe has a huge ego so he will probably want to stay and to prove the opposite," he reasoned.

The situation at the Bernabéu has grown increasingly toxic, with an online petition titled "Mbappe Out" accumulating over 73 million signatures—though not all necessarily from genuine Madrid supporters. Petit warned that Real Madrid's boardroom faces mounting pressure, suggesting president Florentino Perez may be forced into decisive action should the noise from the fanbase intensify further. "The petition of ten million Madrid fans that want Mbappe to leave, I have never seen that before," Petit observed.

Yet despite the mounting speculation and social media outcry, transfer authority Fabrizio Romano has urged caution against reading too much into the current turbulence. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano stressed that whilst relations between player and club have undoubtedly deteriorated, talk of an imminent departure remains premature.

"Let's not say that the relationship between Real Madrid and Mbappe is broken. Let's not say that between Mbappe and Real Madrid is over. Let's not even mention that Real Madrid are considering Mbappe exit in the summer. There is nothing about. Nothing at all," Romano insisted, framing the current difficulties as symptomatic of broader institutional challenges rather than a fundamental rupture.
