Klopp Back in the Frame: Real Madrid Eye Liverpool Legend as Arbeloa's Successor

Real Madrid have set their sights on Jurgen Klopp as a potential replacement for current manager Alvaro Arbeloa, according to reports circulating ahead of the summer transfer window.

The former Liverpool supremo stepped away from the dugout at the conclusion of the 2023/24 season, having decided he needed respite after nearly a decade of relentless work at Anfield. However, his sabbatical proved relatively brief—he took on the role of Global Head of Football at Red Bull at the start of 2025 and has since been repeatedly linked with a managerial return.

Arbeloa, the ex-Reds defender, was promoted from his position overseeing Real Madrid's Castilla side following the departure of Xabi Alonso on Monday evening. Alonso's tenure unravelled amid disappointing results and reported friction with the squad, leaving the club trailing Barcelona in La Liga.

When quizzed on speculation linking him to the Bernabéu hot seat, Klopp offered an intriguing response. "I have been contacted about it, though not directly by Madrid," he revealed. "A few people certainly felt the need to reach out to me about it." He went on to downplay the impact of such approaches, explaining that the overtures failed to stir his interest, though he admitted surprise at the level of interest. "I was genuinely taken aback," he said. "Various people then sent messages my way, and I responded with emojis."

Yet despite Klopp's seemingly dismissive tone, German journalist Florian Plettenberg has provided considerably more substance to the speculation. The respected reporter claims that Real Madrid holds "major interest" for Klopp, revealing that the 57-year-old would seriously contemplate an approach from the Spanish giants, notwithstanding his long-term commitment to Red Bull and his deep investment in their project.

Spanish publication Fichajes has gone further still, suggesting that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has given his blessing to the move. The outlet claims that Klopp would relish the opportunity to replace Arbeloa for two principal reasons: firstly, he feels refreshed after his time away and is eager to test himself at elite level once more; secondly, he is genuinely enthused by the prospect of managing one of world football's most illustrious institutions.
