Phillips Eyed for Deadline Day Switch to Sheffield United

Kalvin Phillips appears set for a potential deadline day exit from Manchester City, with Sheffield United reportedly keen on a loan deal for the midfielder.

The former Leeds United star has barely featured for the Cityzens this term, making just a solitary substitute appearance in the Carabao Cup third-round clash against Huddersfield Town. City forked out £45million to bring Phillips to the Etihad back in 2022, but the investment has yielded precious little return.

Last season saw Phillips shipped out on loan to newly promoted Ipswich Town, following an earlier temporary spell at West Ham United that proved equally fruitless. Hopes that a return to East Anglia might spark a revival proved misplaced, with his campaign cut short by an Achilles injury. A potential move back to Leeds was mooted, but the Whites ultimately decided against pursuing the 30-year-old after his disappointing Portman Road performances.

Having failed to make a single Premier League squad sheet this season, Phillips would have been forgiven for hoping to secure a winter exit. That hasn't materialised—until now. According to reports, the Blades are exploring the possibility of bringing Phillips in on loan, offering him a pathway back to regular football.

Dropping into the Championship with Sheffield United—currently languishing in 17th place—is far from glamorous, particularly given the Yorkshire club's rivalry with his former employers. Yet Phillips may feel he has little option but to accept the offer. The former England international desperately needs consistent minutes to resurrect his career.

His old Leeds teammate Patrick Bamford could prove influential in any decision. Bamford joined Sheffield United as a free agent earlier this campaign and the arrangement has worked well for all involved. That precedent might encourage Phillips to make the move north.

The Blades have improved markedly since Chris Wilder's return, replacing Ruben Selles just three months after his departure. They sit 11 points adrift of the play-offs, but promotion remains a distant prospect. Still, adding a midfielder of Phillips' pedigree could provide meaningful reinforcement.

Sheffield United have already completed one deadline day arrival, securing Sunderland defender Leo Hjelde on a six-month loan. The 22-year-old has been sidelined by Achilles surgery since June and hasn't featured in the Black Cats' first-team setup this season. Hjelde made 17 Championship appearances last term and started in Sunderland's successful play-off final push.
