Alvarez Linked with United Move: Can the Red Devils Actually Pull It Off?

The Julian Alvarez sweepstakes has taken another intriguing turn, with a Madrid-based reporter insisting that Manchester United have entered the conversation alongside Barcelona, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain.

The Argentine marksman spent two seasons at Manchester City, where he netted 36 goals and provided 19 assists across 103 appearances. His silverware collection from the Etihad includes a Champions League medal, two Premier League crowns, an FA Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup. Internationally, he's won the World Cup and two Copa Americas for Argentina.

Atlético Madrid acquired him for £82million last August when he departed England, but the 26-year-old has made clear his desire to move on and "fulfil my dream" since the World Cup.

Real Madrid's €150million (£130m) approach was swiftly rebuffed by the Spanish side, who are demanding his €500m (£431m) release clause. Barcelona currently lead the chasing pack, with the Gunners and PSG also circling.

Enter Marcos Duran of AS, who reckons United have "held direct conversations with Alvarez's team" to explore a blockbuster deal. The journalist points to United's financial muscle and Champions League football as significant drawcards, whilst noting that the club retain painful memories of losing targets to City—Elliot Anderson being the latest example.

With Barcelona potentially out of reach, Alvarez's advisors are reportedly working through backup options, and United apparently feature among them.

Yet realistically, this transfer feels destined to fizzle out. Even if Atlético accept less than the release clause, Alvarez will likely command around €200m (£172m). United's summer kitty is earmarked chiefly for two or three midfield reinforcements, with a £35m agreement already in place for Atalanta's Ederson. They're also battling Tottenham for West Ham's Mateus Fernandes and weighing up alternatives like Alex Scott and Carlos Baleba.

Having already splashed £74m on Benjamin Sesko, United simply cannot justify another blockbuster striker purchase. A more sensible target—think Jean-Philippe Mateta or Dusan Vlahovic—makes considerably more financial sense.
