Jones: Arsenal's Defensive Pairing Crumbled Under Pressure in United Defeat

Phil Jones has identified Arsenal's centre-back pairing as a critical weak point during Saturday's 3-2 loss to Manchester United, claiming the performance was the most unsettled he's witnessed from Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba.

The Gunners mounted a comeback to draw level at 2-2 with six minutes remaining, only for Matheus Cunha to restore United's advantage minutes later. The defeat trimmed Arsenal's Premier League cushion to just four points following victories for Manchester City and Aston Villa.

Speaking on the Sports Illustrated FC podcast, Jones suggested the normally commanding defensive duo appeared rattled throughout. "I've always rated Gabriel and Saliba highly as centre-halves, but what I witnessed on Saturday was the most fragile display from them yet," he explained.

"They seemed anxious, lacking that usual understanding between them. You could sense the unease permeating the stadium—and they felt it too. They weren't dreadful exactly, but there were moments where they looked vulnerable and uncertain. That's the most disjointed I've seen them operate together."

Jones pointed to an almost contagious anxiety spreading through the Arsenal ranks once United levelled. "When that equaliser went in, you could feel the panic ripple through the entire team," he added.

The pundit also singled out captain Martin Odegaard, withdrawn after 58 minutes by Mikel Arteta. "Odegaard was overrun in midfield at times," Jones noted. "He couldn't impose himself physically the way he usually does, and you could see why the manager decided to change things."

Former Tottenham striker Darren Bent, an Arsenal supporter, echoed concerns about Odegaard's form and suggested a tactical reshuffle is overdue. Speaking to talkSPORT, Bent advocated for Eberechi Eze to receive extended opportunities following his impressive showing against Spurs.

"Odegaard needs to come out—genuinely out," Bent stated. "Give Eze four or five consecutive matches. After his performance against Tottenham was exceptional, Odegaard returned and I thought we'd get the version from two years ago back, but he's reverted to form. He's contributing nothing right now."

Bent expanded his critique to Arsenal's attacking play more broadly. "Nobody in the final third can honestly say they don't deserve dropping because they've all been poor," he continued. "I'm baffled why Arsenal keep moving sideways and backwards. That's exactly how United's opening goal materialised—instead of driving forward, we're just shuffling possession around, making it easier for them."

Despite acknowledging Arsenal's defensive solidity throughout the campaign, Bent expressed alarm at their attacking inefficiency when opportunities present themselves. "Manchester City and Aston Villa have both dropped points, yet we've failed to capitalise. That's the real worry for me," he said.

"The only moments I genuinely get excited nowadays are when we win a corner. That shouldn't be where my optimism stems from in a title race."
